Rh11 does support projects being on a network although the OLH does state it will depend on network traffic. However, I can confirm that it is important that the project is first upgraded from the local copy that you had with previous versions of Rh.
Surely if you upgrade the project locally now, the whole point of linking is that changes to the source documents get applied when you then update the links? I'm working on the basis that the links will still be good on upgrade when done locally.
After that you could try moving the project to the network again. I have found that for most things it's just a bit slower. Heavy tasks like generating an output will take longer and only you can find out how much and whether that is acceptable. Working locally will always be quicker but some organisations don't like that.

@petergrainge
I have an update. We restored our backup files (FM10 and RH9 versions) on a local machine, and the RH link to the FM .book file was intact. We then updated the files to FM12 and RH11, and the link broke.
Using a hint from one of Peter's previous posts (Re: RH8 won't upgrade RH7 project. He'p Me!), we tried again, but this time we opened the files in RH11 using the HHP file instead of the XPJ file, then closed and reopened using the XPJ file. Everything worked! And then we copied all of the files back out to the network and they still worked.
One concern was that in doing this we received an error message stating:
An error occurred while trying to read data from path\RHFrameDocs.apj<1>.
Does anyone know what could be causing this? We'd like to figure it out so we can be better prepared next time we upgrade.
Thank you!
