Question

Lot of style/text formatting issues in RH 2022.2.22

We have just upgraded help source files from older version of RH to the latest one found that the new version has a lot of formatting issues and also not the user-friendly.

We are struggling to fix the simple text formatting tasks, such as applying bullet styles and other. Even the options and their (names) terminoloties in a style creation section are also not user-friendly.

Mentioning here some of the formatting issues we faced while working on a project:

  • Style: There is no (simple) option to add spaces before and after the text/style.
  • Mini-TOC: By default it has its own style which not appearing properly in the output. Same issue is there for Related topics placeholder.
  • Related topics: It comes with a placeholder option, but you will have to add all the related topics list in its window which is harder than manaully dragging the topics from TOC to its section.
  • List styles: Options for both OL and UL are not user-friendly. It includes text for bullet styles, such as disc and circle rathen than adding actual symbols.
  • No option to rename a style.

If anybody is using the latest verion of RH and faced these issues, please help.

Regarding the style properties used in Robohelp, I highly recommend the css tutorial at w3schools as the RH fields will make a lot more sense when you understand the css standard.

I can understand your comment about the new UI not being friendly but I can assure you, you will think differently after a while. I now hate having to use Classic versions, it's just a question of it being new to you.

There is a lot of information on my site in the RH2022 About Adobe RoboHelp (grainge.org) that will hopefully help you. To specifics...

Style: There is no (simple) option to add spaces before and after the text/style.

The new versions are strictly HTML5 and CSS3 compliant to ensure compatibility with all browsers. Style names cannot allow spaces under those rules that are not set by Adobe.

Mini-TOC: By default it has its own style which not appearing properly in the output.

You can customise that. See RH2022 Bits and Pieces (grainge.org) and the MiniToc section. Looking at that page you will see how I have customised a minitoc.

Same issue is there for Related topics placeholder.

See the end of RH2022 See Also and Related Topics (grainge.org). Covers changing the styles.

Related topics: It comes with a placeholder option, but you will have to add all the related topics list in its window which is harder than manaully dragging the topics from TOC to its section.

Not a feature I use. I simply create a heading of my own and drag topics from the Contents Panel.

List styles: Options for both OL and UL are not user-friendly. It includes text for bullet styles, such as disc and circle rather than adding actual symbols.

The toolbar contains some supplied lists. You can create your own in the CSS editor with various symbols and they will appear in the Styles panel on the right.

No option to rename a style.

Just go into Source View and rename it there. I'm not sure offhand if that renames it in topics using the style. If not, then use Find and Replace and set it to work on the source code.

    I hope that helps.

Thank you for the quick reply, @Peter Grainge .

Style: There is no (simple) option to add spaces before and after the text/style.

Here, I am talking about the spaced before and after for a style (not for the style name). For example, to add spaces before and after for a heading or other styles.

No option to rename a style.

I also tried to rename the style names from source files/view, but it did not work.

Anyway, thank for sharing URL of your site where I can get information related to this.

I will try to explore it more and update you.

Mini-TOC: By default it has its own style which not appearing properly in the output.

I have already tried to customize it, but it is not working properly.

Before and after spacing horizontally can be adjusted using the Advanced options. They can be more tricky so duplicate the style while you make changes. Vertically play with margins.

Renaming styles can be done in source view but bare in mind that some styles have multiple parts, especially lists.
