Popup from 2017 to 2022

Good afternoon all,

During our migration I run into yet another issue. It seems that the pop up in 2017 were using  onclick script but in 2022 it is using data-rhwidget therefore all my pops are broken and we have 3200 topics with popups how can I fix this 😞

Thank you

christele

You could also look at expanding links. While it won't save you any re-work you won't have to create new topics for all of your text only popup content.

I think expanding text links were a part of RH2017 (hotspot, it might have been called then?) so you should be able to open the text only popup, copy the text, remove the text popup and insert an expanding link with the pasted text relatively easily. That should also upgrade successfully to RH2022.

There were so few changes between 2017 and 2019 I very much doubt it will address the issues they are facing. You will go through a whole load of hoops to prove it.

Personally I would not go there. It will be months before any update contains the change requested and there is no guarantee it will be taken up. I understand it is not as simple as it might seem.

I realise the work involved but I think the answer is in 2022 create one auto-sizing popup with the content of a simple popup, then look at the difference in the code between that and what go upgraded. From that maybe you can work out a Find and Replace.

There is 2019 Classic but it had very few changes. Also I doubt you would get without taking out a subscription and then having to go to Support for a download link.

I'm not seeing any advantage. What is your IT dept logic?

I asked if we could just hold off on the upgrade, and they said RH 2017 is causing issues with new computer imaging and refreshes and asked if there was a newer version that still had all of the existing features.  (I'm not sure what those imaging/refresh issues are.)

Here is the link to the feature request for text-only popups:

Please vote for it if you'd think it would be helpful/nice to have/or just because you're a nice person.... 🙂

I pointed out to Adobe a while back that 2022 is not in the list. Do as @Amebr suggests.

I think Blue Jay was a code name for when the New UI was being developed, don't use that.

@christele15 You haven't come back to say what type of popups are broken. If it is text only, then see the answer to Christine here.

@Christine301653386cjz It seems that the reasons for dropping text only popups are lost in the mists of time. I think Adobe are willing to revisit this so please create a feature request. Please follow this link to report bugs or request new features. https://tracker.adobe.com. Post the link to your bug report / feature request in this thread and others can vote for it. The more people who do so, the higher it gets prioritised.

I realise that will not help you in the short term but there's nothing more I can do. Maybe your developers can home brew something or you can find something on the internet?

Hi Peter.  Thanks very much for your help with this.  I haven't submitted a feature request before; does it matter what Component I select?  I would assume Application would be the one, but maybe it should be RH?  Also, I don't see RH2022 as an option in the Version drop-down.  Could I select a 2020 version and then just note that I'm requesting it for 2022 and any future versions?  Or is the 2022 version called BlueJay (which is an option)?

For my purposes, I could continue using RoboHelp 2017 for a while longer until we see what happens with the feature request; it's been working well and I think we're just upgrading to not get too far behind.  If the request is rejected (or our IT department says no to keeping 2017 longer), I suppose the workaround would be to change all of the text-only popups to auto-sizing popups?  That would be time consuming (and irritating as the auto-sizing popups are each their own file), but I believe that would work and to the end user, the functionality would be the same.

While I'm not Peter, I thought I'd pop in and say that when creating an item I just pick the first thing that doesn't seem completely irrelevant and (snarkily) state in the description that the correct version isn't in the list. 😛 (BlueJay I seem to remember was a codename from about 100 years ago before Adobe even owned the product 😄 )

RoboHelp is now HTML5 and CSS3 compliant and I think it is related to that. I have asked Adobe for more information. What's bothering me here is we are now three versions into the new UI and it hasn't been an issue.

I will follow up when I can.

Text only popups were dropped in the new UI versions. I will see if I can find out why.

Thank you.  It doesn't seem reasonable that they would remove a feature without saying anything about it or providing some workarounds.  We have a lot of text only popups in our projects.  Hopefully they will consider restoring that feature (and converting existing text only popups when projects are upgraded), though I imagine if they do, it would take some time.

    @Christine301653386cjz

When previewing a topic, when I click on the popup, it appears to open a new RoboHelp window where I could open or create a new project (doesn't display the popup at all), which is very strange behavior.

Does this happen if you create a new popup?

What happens if you generate the project and click on a popup that has the problem you describe?

I couldn't find how to create a new text only popup - do you know where that option is located?

I'll have to get access again to see how the existing popups looks in Webhelp; I'm pretty sure it didn't appear but will have to check that again.

@christele15 Are your popups text only popups or regular popups? I have just been reminded that text only popups don't come through in New UI projects.
