Question

Printed record of tracked changes in RH9 or RH10?

On occasion, we would like to produce a printed record of the changes made in RH9 (or RH10--we are considering the upgrade). We can track the changes easily enough, using the Review > Track Changes option. But when I try to output the resulting file to Word (using Printed Documentation), the unedited text, the inserted text, and the deleted text all appear the same.

I didn't see a way to preserve the record of edits in the output, but perhaps I'm overlooking it.

Is there a way?

There is a way. Please follow this link and then wait until Adobe get around to fixing it.

Track changes wasn't intended to be used the way you want.

Maybe a technique I use for another purpose will help. Create a character style  (not a paragraph style) called AuthorNote with a font colour that smacks you in the eyes, fuschia is quite good. Then you can add comments to highlight information you add. I prefix them with ### so that I can search any output to make sure none have slipped through. More recently I add a build tag called AuthorNote and I apply that to all comments so that I can include / exclude such comments.

When I generate anything I leave the comments in for SMEs but exclude them from any release (there shouldn't be any at that stage).

It enables me to ask questions of the SMEs mid paragraph because it is a character style but of course I can also apply it to a paragraph.

If you are generating printed documentation for your SMEs using a Word template, it's worth adding the style there.

Once set up, it's easy to use.

Thanks, Peter. I filed a feature request with Adobe at the link you provided.

We currently edit in Word, using Word's change tracking (which is easily printed, with several different options for how the edits and comments are shown). These printouts are sometimes used for internal discussions around a table, among those of us writing documentation; and for feedback sessions with trainees.

I will explore the solution you propose; but on the face of it, it doesn't seem to be the tool we need.

No it is not what you seek but it is a useful technique for other purposes. Here it would help but not do the real job.
