Question

RH 7 Auto closes on Generatiion of PD

I am using the Tech Comm Suite, Word 2007, XP, RH for HTML.

This project is only small, I have only created the topic headings at this stage.

Whenever I try and generate Printed Documentation (I am single sourcing) RH closes, the Word Doc is generated but not the PDF.

What am I doing wrong? It means that I am having to generate WebHelp first, then PD, then PDF from the Word File.

TIA,
Chris.

I have sent Adobe a sample project but it works on one of my machines and not another! Their own test did not crash. It is being looked at.

Is it worth adding that I also used the Customer Care Sample as my template...

Also tried and made no difference either. I am also on XP, not Vista.

That is not the answer I wanted. :-)

If I don't get back to you in a few days time, post a reminder. No offence will be taken.

I am running XP SP2.

No hurries, we are in one of those lulls in documentation which is why we upgraded now - and there is a reasonably easy workaround.

My thinking was that it would confirm whether or not it was your setup. However I have tested using Customer Care and am getting the same result.

I have tried Leon's suggestion plus several other settings and this makes no difference, it crashes.

Are you on a Vista machine?

I am going to be occupied pretty much for the rest of the evening and in a training session for the next two days. Let me know about Vista and I'll do what I can when I can.

If one of you guys would like to zip up your project and send it to me, I don't mind trying to recreate the problem.

I suggest you use http://transferbigfiles.com or some similar site that you prefer. Email me via my site with a link to this thread. Please do not attach the zip file to the email.

Thanks for offering to look at my files. However, I get this error no matter what help system I use; including the two default helps that come with RH.

I opened Customer Care and selected the SSL that Adobe already has set up for Printed Documentation US. I selected the Generate Adobe PDF check box and set the PDF Settings to the Standard option. I tested both with and without the "Generate Word Doc check box selected the doc format was doc, not docx. Everything else I left exactly as Adobe set it up.

In both cases a DOC file was created but it just won't go to PDF. And RoboHelp just closes.

I tested with a small project, approx. 40 topics, not graphic heavy, so I don't think it is a memory or processor issue. I tested with projects in and out of Souce Control, so I don't think it's an issue with that. Also of note every time the process takes out RoboHelp, the instance of winword.exe process stays open when I look at Task Manager; even though word is closed.

I have updated RoboHelp to the latest publicly available version (7.02.001). Distiller is Professional version 8.1.2. Word is patched to Office 2007, 12.0.6311.5000 MSO 12.0.6020.5000.

I always have the workaround of creating a PDF from the Word doc but not being able to create an Adobe PDF from within an Adobe product feels wrong.

Nice one Leon. Chris, if that is it, please post back to share it.

I am having the same problem with RoboHelp just closing when it tries to create the PDF. I did what Leon suggested and I had no luck getting the PDF to generate. I have a word document but no PDF. Actually this problem is seen by my entire 40ish person team.

Also all the temp files remain on my computer. Under my SSL Printed Documentation a folder called !doc_temp_folder_0 is created and none of the files are deleted from the "temp" folder. I don't know if that gives anyone a clue as to what might be happening. My setup is Adobe Tech Comm Suite and Word 2007.

Assuming the project is on a local drive and not a network, the next question is the amount of RAM on the PC?

Welcome to the forum.

I've known RH to freeze for some people or just fail to generate the PDF but autoclose elegantly.

If you just create the Word document without selecting the PDF, does it generate OK and allow you to open the Word document, If it does, is the Word document correct?

Hi Peter,

Yes, when I generate the Word file only there are no problems. Is there a work around to this though so I don't have to generate the PDF separately?

Thanks,
Chris.
