Question

RH7 and Vista slow, slow, slow

I find that that most actions in RH7/Vista are very sluggish - 60 seconds or so to display a topic's properties, or to create a link. No such problems in RH6 and XP

Does anyone else see this? It is really slowing us down on projects with a large number of links.

Send me the file via either

http://transferbigfiles.com

or

http://www.acrobat.com

The first is easier, the second has Adobe behind it.

My question though was the amount of RAM, not hard disk capacity.

Peterr,

I have sent the project files via yousendit.

This is probably our smallest project. I have an Intel Dore Duo CPU with 3G of memory. All Vista updates installed except for SP1

Typical times:
Create topic: 12 secs
Show properties of topic: 8 secs
Insert help jump: 10 secs for first step, then 15 seconds for second

I have seen times approaching 60 seconds for inserting a jump in other projects.

Entire project zipped is 13,305 kb.

I currently have 32 GB of free space, and another 37.5 GB of used space (total capacity 69.5 GB)

It's the size of the whole lot zipped that I need to know.

Also please advise the amount of RAM on your PC.

Do I detect someone who got a bit fed up trying to find a username? :-)

See previous post as you haven't covered the questions there.

Also define large. How many documents and how many topics in each, just rough figures.

I don't know the answer but the Q and A might just uncover something.

If necessary, is it a project you could send me so that I can see what it is like? Don't send yet. Just advise size.

You are correct on the choice of username I was forced to take on. Actually, I kinda like it now. It's definitely different! LOL...

Size of my project is as follows:

Compiled .hlp file (Winhelp 2000) - 23, 036 kb
docx file - 649. kb
rtf file - 4782 kb
# of topics - 440
# of graphics - 570 (all inserted as true code; all linked to via mid-topic ids)

Nothing unusual running in my Task Manager Applications - just Outlook Express and Firefox - and Robohelp 7 for Word and Word 2007 of course.

David, let me know if you want me to email Peter this project so he can troubleshoot (very kind of you to offer, Peter).
Thanks....Jill

I am using RH7 for Word, and Word 2007. Had no problems with speed of inserting jumps/hyperlinks in RH7 for HTML.....only in RH for Word; it's painfully slow. Working on XP Pro on my own (fairly new) laptop; more than sufficient speed and space, and nothing else running. And only a very few fonts used, although the project is large with a number of topics.
Any idea why it's so slow?
Jill (David's coworker).

No, I have 2007 as well. The number of fonts was a problem and could slow things down. See other posts on that. However, my understanding is that the patches fixed that.

Have you looked a Task Manager to see what is running? Any differences?

Are you both working on projects on your local drive?

Peter,

I have both the updates.

A coworker also sees the same problem. We are both using Word 2007. Can this be an issue?

Works fine on Vista for me. Do you have the patches applied?
