RoboHelp 2017 Image Type Question

I am currently using RoboHelp 2017. I have a very old user guide, not created by me, that has been upgraded to 2017.

I see that the person did not give specific names to images. I do not know what was being used to capture screen shots but when I look at the image types I see that there are duplicate names but one image is a .gif and one is a .jpg. See screen shot attached.

I would like to rename the images but I'm not sure if this will cause problems in RoboHelp. Do you know a 'best method' for renaming the images?

You said you had renamed in Image Properties which is what you see if you click on an image in a topic. There you will see Image Properties and that is where you cannot rename. Project Manager is where you can rename.

I inserted this image into a topic.

Then I clicked and typed just Peter so before clicking outside that box it just read Peter. As soon as I clicked outside RoboHelp added the extension back. I don't know therefore quite how you have managed to rename without that being added.

I agree it is concerning that the file extension is not showing in Explorer and I too would not be happy about leaving it. I can't readily see a quick way of fixing it so I would go into Project Manager and add the extension.

In RoboHelp 2017 I was able to right click on the image in Project Manager and rename. I did generate output and the images still display but when I look at the folder where the project is saved on my computer,, I no longer see the suffixes for the images and they have saved as a 'file'. See the attachments.

I am concerned this will cause issues in the future.

    Thanks again.

My response was regarding the deleting rather than the next step of renaming.

Using 2019 Classic which should be the same, if I tried to change an image name there, RoboHelp would not let me. In Project Manager I was able to rename the image and if I did not add ".jpg" RoboHelp did it for me.

What are you seeing in Project Manager and do the images still show in the topics?

    Thanks Peter.

I was able to open the project and then went through each topic, found the Image Properties to see the name of each. I then changed the name of the image. What I filed to do is include the .jpg, or .png suffix to the name. Is this an issue?

    Thanks again,
    Michele

Thank you for that information. When I look at Topic Properties/Unused Files, I do see a lot of the images listed. That being the case, is it safe to delete the images listed?

That should be the case but there is the possibility that whoever created the duplicates did so for a reason. I can't think what but who knows...

Personally I would create a zipped backup for safety and then go ahead and delete.

I don't know why there are two types of each image but look in Topic Properties > Unused Files to see if they are in fact used.

As long as you rename within RoboHelp everything should be taken care of. Nonetheless, I would create a backup first.
