RoboHelp will not open Project

A few months back we purchased RoboHelp 8 and our help files were created in RoboHelp X5.  Initially, I could not compile the RBH-X5 help files in RBH8 and had to use the corporate RBH (RBH-X5) server.  Last month my computer was re-imaged and some software was upgraded to Windows 2008, MS Word 2007, etc.  I successfully compiled the help files (RBH8) the first part of last week.  I could not get past opening my help file by Friday.  Today, I cannot open the file.  It hoses while Reading Project Source.  What should I do?

Thank you for your feedback!

Hi wfhale92 and welcome to the RH community.

Can we safely assume you are using the RH for Word application here? Also what do you mean by "use the corporate RBH (RBH-X5) server"?

It all makes a lot of sense to me now.  Do you think that removing all of the rtf files and re-compiling will perhaps get me past my current issues?

If you remove the RTF files you end up with a help file with no content. I think you have to face up to the fact that you need a locally installed version on the application for each user. If you have multiple users needing access to a project you'll need to explore a source control application to manage this.

As has been pointed out to me, deleting the RTF files and opening the project recreates them from the .DOC files. Sorry it has been awhile since I worked in RH for Word. However I still think you'd be better off taking the advice offered. I doubt whether recreating the RFTs would solve your issue.

Your assumption is correct.  I am using RoboHelp for word application.

First of all you are invalidating your RH8 licence if it is being installed across a server. You are only supposed to install it on a local machine. If you are then opening a RH8 project from a "client" or "server" location (which by deduction is networked) you are asking for all sorts of trouble. A RH8 project has a database file that if it is run over a network is subject to corruption and all sorts of nastiness.

Hi Collum:

Thank you for your reply.  At some point in the life of developing and maintaining help files in our company, one of our divisions purchased RoboHelp X5 and an earlier version.  They had a dedicated server to perform these tasks.  My division has always stored and maintained the help files on our clients and copied the files to the development server when it was time to deliver to QA.  Because I could not compile the help files using  RBH8 on my client, my co-worker suggested that I compile the help files using the other division's server.

Hope this answers your question.

Wanda
