Question

RoboSource Control not used

I have had my PC re-ghosted recently due to some program unstability and RoboHelp X5 (with 5.02 upgrade) has been reinstalled with RoboSource Control (which I did not have installed before) from the install CD my company purchased 2 years ago. I am using Microsoft Visual Source Safe for version control and would like to know if I could uninstall RoboSource Control in the usual way (Add / remove Programs applet from Control Panel) without it potentially causing any non-desirable effects. I have been noticing weird behaviour from VSS and was wondering if somehow there was a conflict between VSS and RoboSource Control, hence my idea of uninstalling the later. Am I right to worry? Should I leave RoboSource Control?

As RoboSource Control is a completely separate application, you need not worry about any side effects when uninstalling it. Only exisiting projects which are configured to use RSC will miss it.

If you come across such a project, make a backup copy, delete the project's XPJ and CPD and open it using the HHP file instead.

Hi Dirk,
Thanks for the prompt reply, I was not sure RoboSource Control was completely separate.

Dirk is absolutely right, of course, but one thing occurs to me. What I suspect is that the RoboSource Control "client" was installed. You would have to ask the admin whether it was configured to point to VSS (which you can do with third party source control). So, you would have the convenience of using the toolbar icons for check-in check-out etc. that are integrated into the RoboHelp interface. In other words, you would be using the RSC "client", not the database "server" application that is optional. So, removing RSC would remove that integration.

However, if you use VSS "outside" of RoboHelp, then you can use the Add/Remove feature. Since I have never done this personally, I would suggest you backup your projects regardless, as Dirk indicated.
