Question

Search feedback for Accessibility or 508

In a web output like Responsive HTML5 or Frameless, is there a way to provide audible feedback to a visually impaired user doing a search in the help file's search tab? For example, have it announce "search started" or "search complete" or "no results." I assume they are using a screen reader in this situation. This is for accessibility or 508 or WCAG. If this does not exist, is there an alternative output or indicator or solution that would comply with these standards?

There is nothing built in and I haven't seen anyone ask this question before or post a solution.

Thanks for your reply, and my research agrees there does not seem to be a way to do this.

    What I tried:

    • Upgrading to latest Robohelp I could access without a trial made no difference.
    • No applicable settings in Adobe Robohelp outputs or NVDA screen reader.
    • Searched Adobe Issue Tracker and Adobe forums plus Google searching.
    • Found this report but no applicable info: https://www.adobe.com/accessibility/compliance/adobe-robohelp-2019-acr.html
    • Chatted with Adobe agent who was using a different screen reader, JAWS, which did indicate the "search region" but not feedback like I mentioned. They did recommend the "Frameless" output over Web Help for 508 compliance, but that did not have this kind of feedback either.
    • This Adobe page gave some information and tips about 508 compliance and indication of future improvements: https://helpx.adobe.com/robohelp/accessibility-robohelp.html

I would suggest contacting the RH folks directly - see https://helpx.adobe.com/contact/enterprise-support.other.html#robohelp for your Adobe Support options. I'd recommend using the tcssup@adobe.com e-mail address as it reaches a team dedicated to Technical Communication Suite products including RoboHelp.

They might envcourage you to submit a feature request through the Tracker (https://tracker.adobe.com/).
