Question

Urgent - frameless skin does not display graphics as I've set them

I'm working on Windows 10, 64-bit and RoboHelp 2022.3.93.

For weeks now I've battled with the frameless Studio skin, thinking I have the problem fixed, and then it happens again.

I have linked several images into the skin for buttons and backgrounds, and they show temporarily as I've set them (placement, size, position, etc.), and then at some point they revert back to an old image reference (such as "custom_button_place_holder.png", which doesn't exist in the skin) or other images that I've removed from the skin folder. I don't know how these images can be displayed when they are not in the skin folder, but they keep re-appearing, like a bad rash.

I'm a little desperate as I'm supposed to be launching our online help for the first time tomorrow afternoon, and no matter how many times I start over again with a new Studio template, at some point the same thing happens as I'm customizing the skin for our needs.

If any one can give me some idea of what I'm doing wrong, please let me know.

Regards,

Mai-Ann Sprung

I don't think the editor is unstable so it might be your environment. Some thoughts:-

    • Was RoboHelp installed with admin rights? I doubt that is it as I think you would be having many more problems.
    • Is the installation to the default location? I have known different locations, particularly to a different drive, cause issues.
    • After you have got this release out of the door, maybe try uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling. Rebooting is still required for Adobe products generally I believe, certainly for RoboHelp.

Please let us all know how you get on with Support and what they identify.

Commenting on just the UI aspect. The issues I have seen, not many, have related to using Author View or View With when in Author mode as they are not true browsers. However, they don't apply the skin so I doubt that's the issue here.

    Is source control involved?

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for your reply. When I first started having troubles, I was working with a project that was source controlled in SharePoint. However, the latest project resides on my machine only at this time, to ensure that SharePoint wasn't playing a role in the difficulties I am having.

Amebr's response above is actually proving very useful. It's extremely tedious having to save after every little change I make, but so far the project is stable and I'm getting outputs that look as expected (except in the case of one graphic, which won't display, but is the correct graphic when I check the link).

I'm hoping that this will get elevated to RH Support through an email chain I've started with them. The instability of the editor is flabbergasting, and I'm shocked that no one else is having these issues. I can't think what I'm doing wrong to have caused so many failures (I think I've started nearly a dozen different skins, all to end up with the same collection of issues).

    Thanks again for your response.

I don't remember this specific issue being raised previously, however I do remember some people saying that interface doesn't always correctly reflect changes, so you need to close and reopen a file to be sure of the change. I can't remember the specific part of the interface referenced, but it could be worth trying with the skin - make a change, close and reopen and then check the change has stuck.

Also, I remember that in the first few releases of New UI the HTML5 skins were very fragile. While I think the Frameless ones have been more robust, it might be worth extending the check when you close and reopen the file to see if other customisations have been retained.

If you can't spot anything obvious when trying this, then I think your best bet is to contact support. They might have advice, or arrange a screenshare to help troubleshoot. See the following page for support contact options. The email address on the linked page is recommended as it goes to a dedicated Robohelp support team.

I'll give that a try, but it has happened so often now, and in so many different circumstances, it's been very difficult to troubleshoot. Thanks for the suggestion!
