What might be problems with installing 2 versions of RH on one PC?

Hi all,

I currently have RH X5 installed on my PC and have the need for v9 for a new client, but will still need X5 for another client. Can 2 versions of RH live together on one machine and play nicely? If it's possible to have both installed, what kind of problems might there be?

Why do you need X5 for one client? Why can't their project be upgraded to 9?

I believe X5 was the first version that could remain on a machine when you installed a later version but wait for Rick to confirm that. He is the king of multiple installations. There are some considerations though.

You can only have one version of RoboHelp for Word. Dual installation only applies to RoboHelp HTML.
Depending on how you open projects, the XPJ association will be with that latest version. On one machine I was able to change that to the earlier version but on another it proved difficult. I tend to set up my Send To options to cover all versions.
You must purchase the full version but as you only have X5 that would be required anyway.

I was told that to upgrade an X5 project to 9 would require recreating all

links in the project and the client isn't willing to do that now...don't

want to pay for the time to do it. They also archive the source files at

the end of every update I do and want the ability to open and work on the

project if the need arose. They only have X5 and don't want to pay to

upgrade to 9. And all of that doesn't address the problem that the X5

client is the one I've been writing about with the glossary problem - they

don't want to pay to upgrade the project to 9 and perhaps still have the

glossary issues we have. Even if they thought upgrading to 9 would

miraculously solve the glossary problems, I don't think they'd go for the

cost. So I'm stuck with finding a way to work with clients on different

versions of RH and still having to figure out how to fix the X5 project

glossary problems.

I do have 2 desktops, but only use one for any real work. The other is a

backup or used when I want to look at source material on a different PC than

authoring help on just to keep from having to toggle or size windows down.

Maybe I'll have to suck it up and work on the 2nd desktop, even though its

positioning in my workspace isn't an convenient as the other. Sounds a lot

safer than a dual installation.

I used to be told it was the fairies who left money when I lost my milk teeth. Who told you about recreating all links? The client not being willing to upgrade is rather different and you are stuck with that. They may hit browser issues at some point and they do, then they will need to consider the upgrade to deal with that.

If you have a second machine it is of course the safest option.
