Which apps to use to create this help system?

I've got TCS2.5 available. Quite familiar with Frame (using for a few years now), moderately familiar with RH

(last used a couple of years ago to create a .chm for a client's software app).

Same client has a new program that they need to create a help system for (probably .chm again). If possible, would like to single source a printed (.pdf) manual for key concepts.

I'd like to be able to get content to them for review in .pdf format.

Some very basic questions that I hope you can help me with...

  • benefits of developing directly in RH?
  • benefits of developing in Frame and converting to RH?
  • good resource for getting up to speed with RH?

Thanks for any insight you can share.

You'll get better looking PDF output from Frame than from RH. For TCS integration, check out Adobe's RJ Jacquez's blog (http://rjacquez.com/) and Roundpeg's excellent overview webinars (http://blogs.roundpeg.com/)

Conversely, generating your helps works much better if you author in RH; the "integration" is limited and has numerous bugs that have been posted to the forums & listservs. So, decide which is more important to you: the outstanding print control FM gives you for PDFs, or being able to generate helps quickly and reliably without the need for manual corrections and bug workarounds.

The linking can be buggy, but the import process works fine to create help files.
