Wrong font in One Source

I used OneSource to create printed documentation. Although nearly all the font in a section is ARIEL, when converted, a few words showed up in what appears to be SYMBOL or some other font. I cannot find a reason for this, as the fault is listed as ARIEL in the original RoboHelp document. Any ideas?

Glad to see the post from Limestone Springs! Do you happen to know whether the anticipated Microsoft fix will also take care of the other symptom mentioned in this forum -- the one in which a list of fonts appears at the beginning of the first help topic in an HTML help file generated from Winhelp?

Seems like the problem has two symptoms: the "wrong font " symptom and the "list of fonts" symptom, and users experience either one or the other, but not both...

As a user experiencing the "list of fonts" symptom, I am hopeful that the fix will take care of it as well as the "wrong font" one.

Thanks...

I did not encounter the list of fonts problem you are having, so Microsoft Support was only working on the fix for the Wrong Font problem. In fact, I may have made a mis-statement in my original forum message. My company uses Word 2003, so the Security Update solution may only work for those using Word 2003. The fix is contained in the Winword.exe file which may or may not work with Word 2002. Hopefully, both versions of Word use or can use the same Winword.exe file. Microsoft Support notified me two days ago that the Windows Installer for the hotfix was probably 2 weeks out. I plan on sending Peter information on obtaining the hotfix when it is available, so he can post it in a place where everyone can get it. This is not something Microsoft is planning to include in a future Security update.

As a side note, Microsoft caused these problems and they can be fixed, why is Adobe not pushing Microsoft to fixed these documented, Security Updated caused problems?

Thanks,
Limestone Springs

I ran into this problem today and I uninstalled the security patch. I then recompiled, but no change. I then turned on embed truetype fonts and it compiled correctly. I then turned off embed truetype fonts added a space to the document and recompiled and again, it compiled correctly. Thanks to all those who posted. I spent a wasted hour or so trying to fix the problem thinking somehow I caused the issue.

Note also that the problem spreads to every file I edit. Documents that I haven't touched in a long time are fine, but each time I edit a document, the topics from that document have the font problem in the compiled help.

Marjorie

Thanks for the comprehensive post. I have corrected the numbers in my post.

I had already escalated this via channels open the Adobe Community Experts and will update this thread as things develop. At the moment I am awaiting a call from them.

Perhaps you would update the thread re your communications or email me direct if that is more appropriate.

I can understand your manager's view so let's hope the cause can be found.

I'm using Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2, RoboHelp X5.0.2, and Word 2003 SP2. I have found that when I make a change to the topic ID's (or just one for that matter) it changes one topic to Times Roman. Incidently, this is a new topic added to an old project.
I do not have the KB917334 update installed on my PC, so I cant remove it.
I will keep an eye on the this post.. Hopefully something good will arise...
Thank you to all of you who have posted. Although it hasn't fixed my problem, it has enlightened me plenty...

I have talked with tech support from Adobe. The only solution they have to offer right now is that we remove the Word 2003 update (as well as the same update for Word 2002, which was also sent to my PC). They say they have been made aware of the issue, which began on June 14 (the date the Word patch was released), and that their developers are working on an alternative solution, but they also say that they have no time estimate as to when any alternative will be available.

Adobe has also now added a page in their knowledge base about the currently proposed workaround:

This issue just got a bit worse. So far we have been talking about KB917334 which relates to Word 2003. Its equivalent for Word 2002 is KB917335 and that causes a different bit of fun. It prefixes some topic titles placeCity and you cannot clear it. You think you have but reopen the project and there it is again.

UPDATE: Patch numbers corrected 29/6

I am having the same problem (Word 2003 SP2, Windows XP).

However I have removed the Windows Update specified (KB917335) and there has been no change. I thought it might have been because I am using WinHelp 4 rather than 2000 but I have run a compilation in 2000 and the same font issues exist.

The problem is with all the text in my project (not just conditional) and it is with all of my projects. Since I uninstalled the update (and uninstalled and re-installed RoboHelp) I have gone back to files I haven't touched for years and the problem is there.

Anybody else struggling to fix this issue?

Hi Blaketown

First of all would you please take a copy of your project, zip it up and put that somewhere safe. I know Adobe are looking at this issue and I might need to ask you to send them a copy of your project, if that is possible.

Have you tried making a change in your project, even if it is just adding and then removing a space? Otherwise try changing the default font in your template.

Please let us know how you get on.

Thanks Sugit. The issue has been brought to the issue of Development in Adobe.

Same kind of problem here: suddenly my RoboHelp for Word project shows in a Times font in stead of Arial. The problem only occurs (and is removed) after changing the documents.

Solution: removing the Security update for Word 2003 KB917334 (June 15,2006). Thanks eschapp!

By the way: removing the update messes with some parts of the Windows desktop, I can only hope that nothing is really damaged.

As I have automatic updates on, the same security update was installed today, again causing the same problem, again resoved by removing it.
Anyone knows if anybody is doing something about this? Or do we all just have to switch off automatic updates from Microsoft?

I subscribe to Brian Livingston's newsletter at www.windowssecrets.com/.

The gist of their advice is that automatic updates are OK for people who really do not understand PCs or who do not keep close to what is going on. Otherwise their view is that most people should turn it off and consider each update after watching various forums and newsletters such as theirs. In other words, let someone else suffer first. Now obviously there is a period between the update period being available and you installing it during which you are at risk and which could otherwise have been avoided. You might take the view that you have suffered that danger until the patch was available. It's one of those situations where you have to make your own call, assuming your IT dept allow that. Here's the specific topic.

Another reason currently being cited is that although it is not a critical security patch, Microsoft are installing the Microsoft Genuine Advantage software under that guise. Now I am not suggesting anyone is running illegal copies and will thus be caught. The point here is that it cannot be uninstalled and it is, I understand, only a beta version so it has not been through Microsoft's testing routines. The stuff that has can cause enought grief and there seems to be evidence that this update is causing problems to genuine users as well.

Take a look at the above site for the authoritative view.

I am having a similar problem. I create a default Windows 2000 help file using the default topic. I compile it and all the text is in Ariel. All I do is change one letter in the default topic, recompile, and now the text is all in Times Roman. I have tried everything. I compared the *.rtf files and they are much different. I did upgrade to Adobe Reader 7.0 yesturday. I don't know if this is related. Everything was working fine yesturday. Today any file I open and edit in RoboHelp the font changes from Ariel to Time Roman. I sure hope someone can help us.

We had this problem, too. We found no solution except to deinstall the Microsoft Office Security Updates from June 14th (updates for Word and Powerpoint).

Thanks! That fixed the problem I was having. Hopefully this fixes Mark's problem as well.
