Question

Line tool stuck

When I use the line tool to draw a line. I click on the initial point and then click the intended end point to complete the line. Too many times when I click on the initial point and then click on the desired end point, I cannot complete the line. The line follows my cursor but won’t complete creating the line. The only way to get out the malfunctioning line tool (or this file) is to force quit (task manager) to close the file (I cannot do anything else to the file).

It happens randomly.

VERY FRUSTRATING!

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance for any help!

You might want to try switching to the Old Acrobat interface, View>Disable New Acrobat menu command, and use the “drawing tools” within the Comment toolset.

Though, as I’m working on my Mac this morning, I can use the drawing tools within Acrobat and I’m not experiencing the problems you’re having. My system reports I’m using the latest version of Acrobat Pro, 2026.002.21901.

That’s not to deny that you’re having the problems you’re having. Y’all obviously are, and I would not deny that. But if you’re having problems getting Acrobat to release your drawing tool in “New Acrobat”, you may want to try this in the interim:

Draw the freehand element/line/shape you want

Go back to your toolbar, ignoring the fact that your “line” is continuing as you move your cursor

Click on the Select Tool, as shown in the illustration below

This should release your drawing tool, and dispatch the errant additional drawing element you saw leading to the toolbar.

The “drawing tools” available in the “New Acrobat” are actually an extension of the Comment toolset provided in older versions of Acrobat. In fact, if you click on the object frame after you create it, it will give you the option to add a comment in the flyaway menu. They’re really not a fully formed drawing toolset like you’d find in Illustrator, Photoshop or other Adobe graphic applications.

Hope this helps,

Thank you Randy, Yeah, I am using the ‘Draw Line’ in Comments.

When I have drawn the line though and I cannot drop it, I can move to that ‘Select Tool’ button ( or anywhere in fact) dragging the line with me, but it doesn’t allow me to click on anything whilst I have the line attached. I have to push Esc and then it releases and clears the line.

I was only able to solve this by uninstalling all the Acrobat stuff, and also used the Cleaner Tool, and then re-installed Acrobat. Works now.

Will see if it comes back. Thanks!

Hopefully it won’t come back for you. For what it’s worth, it seems you’re not alone and folks are figuring out workarounds to keep working. Hopefully the developers on the Acrobat team will see this and come up with a quick solution.

Good Luck,

Me too. I have a major problem drawing shapes. I choose the shape or line, drag it out, then I cannot drop it. No mouse buttons will release the line to place it in position. What the heck is going on?

Hi @bjido,

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for the trouble, and the delayed response.

Would you mind letting us know the type of files you are trying to use the line tool? Is it a general PDF file or a file created through AutoCAD?

We made many stability and performance enhancements with the subsequent updates.

Please update the app to the latest version (2024.005.20414) and let us know if the issue is fixed for you. To do so, go to Menu-> Help-> Check for Updates.

If it persists, please share a screen recording video of the entire workflow for a better understanding and further investigation.
