Microsoft Word document with many Word styles mapped to Adobe bookmarks- PDF fails to complete

I have a 1400 page MS Word document with hundreds of bookmarks that I am trying to convert to a PDF. When I click Acrobat > Create PDF from the Word menu, which I believe uses the Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM addin, the PDF creation runs for hours and doesn't complete. I have also tried printing to a PDF and saving to a PDF file without success.

We are using these versions:

  • Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise -en-us 16.0.14931.20274
  • Adobe Acrobat DC 21.011.20039

A Word document can be provided on request for testing.

I also have an interest in the root cause of this problem. I have a Word document with 857 bookmarks that fails in the Create PDF stage. A Word documents with 311 bookmarks work just fine in the Create PDF stage. I would be interested whether Adobe could debug the problem and tell us whether it is related to the number of bookmarks, memory requirements, or some other cause.

@Harsh Vardhan Pareek  - can I provide a document to someone at Adobe to debug?

Hi @Amber24431455pasg

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble. As described, Adobe Pro DC is not converting the word document to PDF.

Is this a behavior with a particular PDF file or with all the PDF? Please try with a different PDF file and check. If the file is stored on a shared network/drive please download it to your computer first and then try to export.

Also, update the app to the most recent version 2022.001.20117. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

You may also try to reset the Acrobat preferences as described here - https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/how-to-reset-acrobat-preference-settings-to-defau...

Also check out the help pages listed below:

https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-dc-crashes-on-windows-os.html

Let us know if that helps.

Regards,

Harsh

I don't know whether this would be helpful, but here is the sysinfo for my Adobe Acrobat DC installation. I also cannot convert Word documents to PDFs when the number of headings->bookmarks is high (> 800 bookmarks).
