Updated Acrobat Pro to 8.2.4 Now it will not launch.

I just updated my Acrobat 8 Pro to 8.2.4 and I get an error message that says

"Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 cannot be launched at this time. You must launch at least one other suite component . . . "

I am on a Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon running OS 10.6.4.  I use Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium, which is activated for the computer I use.

I have never had this problem when updating Acrobat before. What does it mean by "you must launch at least one other suite component  . . ."? I opened Photoshop CS3 but that did not solve this.

What is the solution? How can I get Acrobat Pro to work?

Thanks for any help.

I wish I had noticed the detail that this update was only for

v10.4.11 - 10.5.5. I too am running 10.5.8 and had this problem. My fix was to ONLY use Time Machine to replace the Acrobat program only. Not the folder, not prefs, not anything else. I restored a pre-update version of Acrobat 8.2.3 and when Time Machine asked if I wanted to replace the original or keep both, I said keep both. I then opened the restored 8.2.3 version a few times, checking most fuctionalities. I then trashed the Acrobat Professionl (original) version that Time Machine created, checked the 8.2.3 again a few times, and then emptied trash. So far, everything is working again.

The latest patch released by Adobe 24th Aug 2010, fixes this issue. Its working fine for me. Apply this patch via auto update for download it from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4767 . This is working for me.

    All the best.

I was able to successfully apply the 8.2.4 update manually by running "Help > Check for updates" from Adobe Acrobat 8 (part of CS3 Suite) - everything is working fine now.

I'd like to say I'm suprised by this but in truth I'm not.

Way to go Adobe with the utter joke that is trying to update past 8.1.6 to anything higher, to the Mac Vegas thing now this? How much do you owe my company for my time?

    C'mon get this fixed pronto.

    New Acrobat 8.2.4 Update

    Updated KB document:

    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/861/cpsid_86169.html

    Issue

Macintosh Adobe Acrobat 8.2.4 (CS3) for Macintosh is unable to launch after applying the Acrobat 8.2.4 Update via the auto-update mechanism in the product.

This issue appears only to impact only the version of Adobe Acrobat 8.2.4 (CS3) for Macintosh that is included with the Adobe Creative Suite 3.

    Solution

Adobe has released a new Acrobat 8.2.4 Update via the auto-update mechanism for Adobe Acrobat 8.2.3 (CS3) for Macintosh. Adobe recommends that you check for updates by choosing Help>Check for Update from the Adobe Acrobat menu bar.  You will be prompted to install all Adobe Acrobat product updates to version 8.2.4.

If you have an Adobe Acrobat 8.2.4 (CS3) for Macintosh user, have already installed the Acrobat 8.2.4 update and are experiencing the launch issue, Adobe recommends that you reinstall Adobe Acrobat 8.0.0  from the Adobe Creative Suite 3 installation media, and then check for updates by choosing Help>Check for Update from the Adobe Acrobat menu bar.  You will be prompted to install all Adobe Acrobat product updates to version 8.2.4.

    Additional information

If your installation of Adobe Acrobat 8.x for Macintosh was not part of the Adobe Creative Suite 3 installation you can manually update your application via the Downloads Acrobat for Macintosh Downloads  page.

If you have Adobe Reader 8.x for Macintosh installed, you can manually update update your application via the Downloads Adobe Reader for Macintosh Downloads page

So, now I have to get out my installation downloads, re-install, and sit around waiting for all the updates, in order to get the software I paid for to work again after being disabled due to a situation caused by Adobe after installing their recommended security patch?

The Internet has a word for that...

    FAIL!

Adobe screws things up and then leaves it to the customer to clean up the mess.  How difficult is it to release an update that would correct the problem without forcing users to reinstall a 2-year old piece of software and upgrading it multiple times to get back to where they were a week ago before Adobe messed things up?

it is even worse, if the reinstallation does not work!!!!!!!!! There should be some kind of regress.

Maybe it leads to use open source instead of not working professional stuff

Here's what I did yesterday that is working so far:

1-Followed suggestion about Time Machine combined with Adobe support page information and restored and replaced these folders:

Note: This folder path refers to the  Library folder at the root level of the startup disk, not the Library  folder that is inside a user's Home folder.

    • In the Finder, navigate to /Library/Application Support/Adobe
      • Acrobat
      • Adobe PCD
      • Adobe PDF

    2-After restoring and replacing those, I then restored/replaced 8.2.3.

    So far so good.

    Good luck everyone!

I dread the thought of having to reinstall everything all over again, especially since this was ADOBE's fault. I find their cavalier attitude towards this entire incident rather unbecoming of them. Perhaps Steve Jobs was right in dumping Flash... I think a collective lawsuit for losses sustained due to the Adobe's ineptness needs to be explored.

The reinstall worked for us in Mac OSX 10.5.8 but it doesn't make us feel better that our production was shut down for 3 hours this a.m because of this idiocy.

Adobe customer support is another issue. The issue is: THERE ISN'T ANY! The company should care more about those of us who have problems instead of sending us to a call center in Pakistan.

8.2.4 was really brilliant of you guys. Did anyone actually try it to see if it worked BEFORE releasing this turd?

Thanks for the tips regarding replacing the entire Adobe Acrobat (application) folder with a backup copy (Time Machine). This worked for me.

While I am not surpised that Adobe arn't responding very well, big companies are good at doing this - I am surprised that the update was released with a critical flaw and not immediately resolved - particularly as this is a tool used by professionals and means lost time / productivity.

There use to be a facebook page on adobe problems and when adobe seemed to ignore request, they would get to work fixing problems because facenook is out there for world to see. They didn't like the world to see all their warts. My suggestion is if you don't get satifaction  other ways , to look up this facebook page and post.

I'm running CS3 Extended under Mac OS 10.5.8.  I reinstalled Acrobat 8 Professional from my original CS3 install disk -  just clicked "Install or Reinstall" - didn't uninstall first, just reinstalled Acrobat 8. The update/reinstall took about an hour as it decided to nstall Adobe CS3 Design Platform, Acrobat 8 Professional and and Shared Components. I only have two CS3 disks and it didn't ask for any others but the first one.
After this was over I had a functioning copy of Acrobat 8. It did not ask for my serial number by the way - just launched.
In a spirit of adventure, next I used Adobe Updater.  This took 26 minutes and now I have a functioning copy of Acrobat 8.1.3.
I just checked again and now it's offering me an update to Acrobat 8.1.4.  I think I'll pass for now. I don't know what I'm missing by not having my original 8.2.3 but as far as I'm concerned Acrobat can just sit there and be 8.1.3 until the cows come home.
Note to self: get an external hard drive and set up Time Machine.

We're trying to follow the fix (reinstall Acrobat from CS3 discs) suggested here:

    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/861/cpsid_86169.html

However, the installation process is hanging on a request by the installer app to insert an installer disc for After Effects - which we don't have as separate installer disc for! We've tried to re-insert the installer disc for Adobe CS3 Design Premium, but the installer application rejects it.

Has anybody else found that they were unable to reinstall Acrobat from disc after this fiasco?

Any ideas on how to fix this one?

    August 24, 2010

The same problem. I was asked to put in installer disc for Fireworks, although I have CS3 Standard! Have no idea what to do...

    August 24, 2010

    Dear Adobe,

PLEASE! post any trial version of ACROBAT 8 for MAC which we could download and start to work again. I am really getting dissatisfied with this!

    Thank you!

Ah, actually I do have a response from Adobe support. After telling them that I reinstalled Acrobat 8 and started to go through the software updates only to get stuck at 8.1.5 because 8.1.6 won't install, their response was exactly the same as the one we all saw right at the beginning of this sorry mess: open up another CS3 application and Acrobat will stay open, or words to that effect. Which obviously doesn't address the problem, since that isn't even my problem, and I can only think that whoever wrote it didn't even bother to read my question (or the exchange before it). It's shocking.

Time Machine: learnt my lesson. I have it of course, just never quite got round to connecting to any back-up media. Top of my list now. Adobe are at the bottom.

Meanwhile, some of us are still stuck on 8.1.5 because the 8.1.6 update won't install. No response from Adobe on this matter. Not happy.
