why do some of my documents have opening arrows at sub-titles and some only to the title

Would you mind sharing more details about the issue you are experiencing? A small video recording of the same would be very helpful.

Have you created these documents or have you got it from a different user? What is the process followed to create these PDF files? If you are the owner of the documents, try recreating the documents from the source file via Adobe Acrobat Pro https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/creating-simple-pdfs-acrobat.html and see if that works.

What is the version of the Acrobat DC you are using? To check the version go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure you have the recent version 23.01.2017x installed. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Also, try to repair the installation from the help menu (Win Only) and see if that works.

You may also try to create a new test user profile with full admin rights in Win or enable the root account in MAC and try using the application there and check.
