XDP PDF Files don't open in Edge after Adobe 2025 Upgrade

I had asked this question a week ago but I can’t find it anymore. Here is the link to it.

https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/xdp-pdf-not-opening-after-upgrading-to-adobe-2025/m-p/15661592

Basically the answer provided to me was below.

“Starting with newer Acrobat releases (and fully enforced by 2024/2025), Acrobat removed all browser plug-in support, and ActiveX / NPAPI integration is no longer available; also, IE-mode hooks are no longer honored.

More info about it here: https://adobe.ly/4pGmvst

As a result, the browser can no longer hand off XDP files directly to Acrobat; thus, Edge now treats the XDP/PDF as a downloadable file. You see Open / Save instead of inline rendering”

So we are looking at the way ahead. We can continue to use Adobe 2020 for the time being until we migrate the application to a newer technology. But is there a drop dead date of some sort where Adobe 2020 version stops working or being supported. I see that the end of core support for Adobe 2020 was on Nov, 2025 (Products and technical support periods). What does that mean with respect to using Adobe 2020 version.

Thanks,

Madhu

    Hi Team,

Is there a way to get back this community question I asked. I still can’t locate it anywhere.

    Hello @Madhu_N G1676

I hope you are doing well, and thank you for reaching out.

Please note that we recently migrated to a new community platform, and threads created between November 17, 2025, and January 26, 2026, will be added soon. No data will be lost, and you won’t need to recreate anything.

About the issue/question you shared, Adobe has formally documented that support for all Acrobat 2020 products (Reader, Standard, Pro) ended on November 30, 2025, in accordance with Adobe’s Support Lifecycle Policy. Please check this article for more details: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/end-of-support-acrobat-2020.html

In your earlier thread, the key change was already identified correctly:

    • Modern Acrobat releases (2024/2025) removed browser plug‑in, ActiveX, NPAPI, and IE‑mode integration
    • As a result, XDP files can no longer be rendered inline via the browser
    • Browsers now treat XDP/PDF as downloadable files instead

That behavior is by design in newer Acrobat and will not be reversed.

Using Acrobat 2020 as a temporary bridge while you migrate the application is, therefore, a valid short‑term strategy, but with these constraints:

    • No security fixes
    • No compatibility guarantees with future Windows or Edge updates
    • Increasing risk over time as platform changes accumulate

    Suggestions:

    • Migrate to a newer Acrobat version (subscription / Continuous track)
    • Modernize the application stack
      • Move away from XDP + browser‑embedded workflows
      • Align with current PDF/web standards

See these articles for more information:

    https://helpx.adobe.com/in/sign/adv-user/send-workflow/overview.html

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anand Sri.
