Basically a patch for security software Cloudstrike was rolled out with instructions to access a forbidden memory address in Windows, causing Windows to crash.

Here's an explaination by one programmer why it happened.

On a related note, I remember a newbie forum member that wanted to know how to send a gnormous file through email. I tried to explain services like Mega or YouSendIt (now Hightail) was the better option, but the guy angrily responded "I said email!"
