Question

"553 address unknown" trying to post by email

Hello;

What are the exact methods for posting by e-mail?  Do the Sender or From fields need to be the proper registered account?  Should the quoted text of the original notification e-mail be included?

I recieved a 553 error trying to make my first post by replying to a notification e-mail.  Here is a snippet:

                   The mail system

<clearspace-1440542950-kWu-2-81rr@mail.forums.adobe.com>: host

    <clearspace-1440542950-kWu-2-81rr@mail.forums.adobe.com> address unknown.
(in reply to RCPT TO command)

I was trying to post a response to the notification for http://forums.adobe.com/message/1912169#1912169 .

I had removed the quoted text of the notification.  Gmail sets the "From" field of my e-mails to the proper e-mail address registered with adobe's system, but it leaves the "Sender" field as my primary account that collects all my mail (not registered with Adobe).  I use separate accounts to sort out spam and whatnot -- I don't know if that might cause a problem.

Is e-mail posting working for others?

You need to have an "envelope from" address that is a registered account

and need to reply to the "reply-to" address in a message.

Do the Sender or From fields need to be the proper registered account?

The ones you see in an email client don't matter because they are

carried in the message content. The one that matters is the one in the

    envelope.

Should the quoted text of the original notification e-mail be included?

That could help to provide context to readers. Be sure to include only

    the relevant parts

If you still have the error message, check the source code or

attachments. There should be a line in there somewhere that reads

    something like:

    X-Postfix-Sender: rfc822; spam@vandieten.net

Is the address listed there the address of a registered account? If it

is you have found a bug, if it isn't you need to correct your email

setup (I have no idea how or what if you are using Gmail).

Thank you for the assistance.  I still recieve the same error trying to e-mail from my primary account.

You need to have an "envelope from" address that is a registered account

and need to reply to the "reply-to" address in a message.

    This is my setup.

The ones you see in an email client don't matter because they are

carried in the message content. The one that matters is the one in the

    envelope.

Yes -- when I am talking about headers I mean the ones the client shows in the envelope when viewing the raw message sent to the server.  I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the proper terms.

If you still have the error message, check the source code or

attachments. There should be a line in there somewhere that reads

    something like:

    X-Postfix-Sender: rfc822; spam@vandieten.net

I do not have this line.  Here is a quote of the entire headers sent (the envelope, I think?) -- where I have put WRONG@wrong.wro gmail has placed my primary account, and REGISTERED@registered.reg is the one registered with adobe:

    MIME-Version: 1.0

When I sent a message straight from the account registered with Adobe and it worked, I noted that the Delivered-To field had changed to the proper registered address.  I can paste those headers too if it is helpful.

What are the exact methods for posting by e-mail?

Good question. We really need an FAQ on this. The unknown address is the From:

one - this must be the same as the one you have registered with the forums and

the one you receive notifications on. Send in plain text; quote relevant bits

of the post you're replying to by starting each line with a greater than sign

and a space. Use bold and italic for emphasis. Don't use lines of dashes

or underscores, don't put anything in square or angle brackets, and don't let

your email client attribute the previous poster with a line ending in 'w r o t

e :'. Then you should be good to go.

To start a thread, you have first to be subscribed to email notifications from

the forum you want to post to. Then on the Adobe Forums homepage, select the

Mailing lists tab on the 'Your stuff' dropdown. There you should see the email

addresses to use to start a new thread, ready to put into your address book.

This is test post #3 -- using the actual e-mail account registered

with Adobe. Sender: field is the same as From: field.

I've just subscribed to this discussion with my gmail account. Posting with this one to generate an email to reply to. I'll take a look at my gmail settings and let you know how I'm set up.

I'm replying here from Gmail. I have Gmail set up with my forum email

address (gmail) as "Send mail as:" and a different email address (at my own

    domain) as my Reply-To address.

Strange -- it does not work for me.  My adobe e-mail forwards to my primary e-mail address, which is the one that ends up in the "Sender: " field.  The "From: " field is my proper registered-with-Adobe e-mail, decorated with a descriptive name.  My Adobe-registered address is the gmail "Send mail as:".

I tried again, posting a reply to this thread, but recieved the same error.  I will try straight from the account registered with Adobe.
