How do I level up my avatar?

What a way to encourage the wisest and most helpful people to contribute! Give them an extra little red box under their name every so often! Brilliant! So, how many experience points does my character need before I reach level 2? Are there other achievements? Do we get a gold star at 500 posts? If we get 5 red boxes can we get to teh elite boards, where there are no newbs?

It's a bit like the first 5 marks for writing your name correctly on the test paper. As far as I can see, everybody gets a complimentary red bar for finding the door.
