PC spec for Illustrator

I would be so grateful for advice on following.

I am undertaking a graphic design course where I am currently beginning learning Adobe Illustrator. I am using windows XP which is bang up to date. However, upon commencing the 'beginners' course where I began to design basic shapes; a message popped up on the screen inform me that in order to run Illustrator at the required speed, I would need to install Adobe 9 (I think). I have downloaded my course software Illustrator CS3.

I wonder if someone could tell me exactly what software/hardware is needed to run Illustrator.
