Underlining.

Why does the Jive software change my "underline" tags to "span" tags when I post, thus eliminating the underline I wanted?

    Because <span> is the proper way of text formatting.  However, all text formatting is removed after posting, with the sole exception of bold and italics (which use the <strong> and <em> tags).

    The span tag is one way of formatting.  The underline tag is still perfectly workable.

    Also, if the tag isn't going to be honored, why is Underline an available option in the formatting?
