Question

After Effects CC 2018 running incredibly slow on new machine.

I just bought a new computer with 56GB of RAM, GeForce GTX 1060 card and a Threadripper CPU to get a pretty serious working station.

I downloaded the latest version of After Effects, and to my complete dissapointment it runs like sh*t.

It even struggles to preview the most simple of animations, it runs just as bad as my old computer.

I looked around but couldn't really find any solution but many people had the same issue.

I'm having a hard time accepting that my new computer was just a waste of money and that AE just can't use all of it's power.

I'm having the same issues with AE on my new Threadripper 2990 and even went to 2018 from 2019 which helped a little with stability.

Overall the app is very sluggish. I had to go back to working on my MBP to get my work finished.

When will there be a stable release for AMD is my question?

Sometimes RAM preview runs slowly unless the Viewer is set to 100%.

Did you try making the same project in CC2014, and checking if the problem was only in 18?

Did you try throwing out your computer and getting a new one?

- Is it a fresh install, or ported over from your other computer?

- what kind of animation? Any plugins being used?

Fresh install, everything new and fresh.

A dead simple animation, about 8 small shapes with a couple of effects on them.

No plugins.

- Have you run non-After Effects benchmarks, like GeekBench, to see which computer does better?

- Run this AE benchmark on both computers, and see which one wins: After Effects Performance Test File on Vimeo

- Is your AE viewport set to Standard or Raytrace? (upper right hand corner of viewport.)

- Did you turn on Metal/OpenCL? Go to Project Settings, and make sure you’re using the GPU.

- is there a difference in the clock speed / GHz of the processor in your old vs. your new computer? After Effect 2018 won’t take advantage of multiple cores. If you‘d like to use more cores, either work in CC2014 and turn on multiprocessing, or use a plugin like RenderGarden.

- Do you use a cache drive? Is it an SSD? Getting a fast SSD— something that runs at 500mbps— as your cache drive will speed up working in AE.

- Are you working in 4K with uncompressed footage? Then you’ll need a RAID array to read and write that footage quickly enough.

I'm using the GPU like you said.

I've understood that it doesn't take advantage of muliple cores now, that's a dissapointment.

Running everything from my SSD and not working in 4k.

It's really ridiculous, even on half or a quarter resolution the preview is laggy.

I don't understand!

Appreciate you trying to help me!
