InDesign Bold & Italic [Branched from: Cannot bold/italicize text in paragraph]

I'm using InDesign and finding that I'm having the same issue. I just want to bold a certain phrase in my text box. I will highlight it and select [Bold], which it shows as being applied, but there is no change to the text. I'd love some direction on how I can address this. Thanks!

When the word bold appears in brackets (i.e., [Bold] ), it indicates a missing style. You can download the bold style for that font, or use a font that you have installed that has bold available.

Barb is correct. In addition:

  • if you are in Normal screen mode from the View menu, the text will be in pink because you are missing the font

     and

  • the status bar will show an error in the Preflight section.

Thank you. I had to enable and activate the correct fonts. This was very helpful.

Hi there,

As Barb and Jane mentioned, you need Bold and Italic variant of this font installed on your system.

Please click on the dropdown menu below the font menu to check if that font has "Bold" or "Italics" as an Option or not. If the font does not show that Bold and Italic in this list, InDesign will not be able to apply it on the text.

For more details please check out this help article: Use fonts in InDesign.
