Morning everyone,

I am really struggling to understand the behavior of the master pages wrt the headers and footers. I have seen a lot of articles and videos and doing exactly as been told. But still cant get it to work. Has anyone had this problem and successfully sorted it out. Please help.

Many thanks

    Hi Jay,

In addition to what Chad said, you may have more than one master page. We don’t know if you created the document or someone else did.

Say that one master called Master A has one column and a footer and another master called Master B has two columns and no footer. The pages using Master A will have the footer; the pages using Master B will not. You can put the footer on Master B and it will then appear on those pages.

That is a very simple explanation, and it can be more complex, as this is a powerful program. If you can open the Pages panel from the Window menu and make it taller and post a screen shot to the forum, we can better assess what you have. There is a dividing line in the panel where the masters are on top and the pages are on the bottom. Please drag that line down so we can see all the masters in your document. That’s important.

Thanks everyone for replying. The issue was with 2 master pages mysteriously overriding each other in some pages. I have manually detached the master pages and attached the appropriate ones. It is all sorted now.

If you have the header/footer on the master page, then you simply need to apply the master page to each document page. You'll se a small letter on each document page in the Pages panel indicating the prefix of the master page applied.

The concept of header and footer is really a word processing term.

With publishing software, repeating elements, such as folios, are put on a Master Page.

It would be helpful for you to have some  basic training in using this professional level software. There are some great books, such as the Classroom in a Book series, personal training at local colleges and private companies and the online video training tutorials from companies like Lynda.com (you can get 30-days free access).

And of course return to this forum for specific questions.

(Always include your version of InDesign and OS.)

    Hi Derek,

    thanks for your reply.

I would like to emphasize,  as i have already done in my message above, that i have tried all sources of information before i jumped in here to post for help. I agree we have moved to Indesign very recently and hence seeking for help just incase we are missing something or making obvious mistakes.

    Best regards
