Hey there,

I'm an absolute beginner at Indesign. For my study I need to learn it so I followed the beginners tutorial.

The tools that I used like text size, font, grouping etc where on the right side when I practised. So the same lay-out seen in the beginner tutorial video

But when I opened Indesign later on I saw the pannels: pages, layer, links etc. But not the workspace i worked with in the tutorial. All the options where in the top now. This is very confusing for me..

How am I able to change this back to the old lay-out?

You want to use the Essentials workspace, which is the default for new users, and has the Properties panel at the right (the single panel with a combination of settings you describe). At some point you switched ... maybe to Essential Classic.

To switch workspaces, click on the Workspaces menu, which shows the name of your current workspace (here, it's Essentials Classic), and choose another one:

Or, you can open the Properties panel on its own from the Window menu, which lists all the panels in alpha order.

Try resetting your workspace or even switching to a different workspace.

You can do this from the menu by going to Window > Workspace.

There is also a drop down menu near the upper right corner of the InDesign interface which will likely read Essentials. From there you can also reset or switch workspaces.
