After installing Windows 10 Upgrade I Can't install Premiere Pro CS5.5

Microsoft has been trying to do an automatic upgrade of my Windows 10 for 2 weeks. So my computer made an unsuccessful attempt over 10 times a day for 2 weeks. Two calls to Microsoft support for a total of 5 hours, and several days of attempts on my own. I finally did figure out how to do it myself, but because I also then needed to do a clean install, now I need to reinstall all my programs. Oh JOY of JOYS!!!

My most important one is Adobe Premiere CS5. After installing the latest Windows 10, version 1709, I put my installation disk in and let it go. It did fine, up until it reached 99% installed. I could see it was then having problems because that last % was taking much longer. Finally my screen froze and I got a blue screen computer crash.

When I attempted to do the install again, it attempted to do the install, but stopped after a couple of minutes and then a window showed up which said the following. "Installer failed to Initialize. This could be due to a missing file. Please download Adobe Support Advisor to detect the problem." I've since learned there is no Adobe Support Advisor to download. One online suggestion was to go to Program files x86 - Common files - Adobe - OOBE. Then to change the name of the OOBE folder to OOBE.old.    It didn't work.

I'm considering doing another clean install to totally remove anything which may have gotten corrupted during these last two attempts. But this time, instead of using the disk to install PP CS5.5, I'm wondering if copying the entire disk to my hard drive, and then doing the install from there would be a solution?

I'm feeling pretty lost without my best virtual buddy, Premiere Pro CS5.5, and would very much appreciate any suggestions. Willing to cross all fingers, toes, and eyes if you think that would help. Would love to go with Premiere Pro CC, but for right now it's out of my price range.

    John, thank you very much for all of your help.  Sorry this is so long, but there is some important information here.

    I have finally been able to install Premiere Pro CS5.5 on my computer running the latest version of Windows 10 version 1709.

    A level 3 Microsoft Tech called me on Feb 10, just after I had done my 11th or 12th clean install of Windows over the past 4 weeks. Using a different computer to download and create a USB installation of the software, I had actually been able to install the upgrade. The one I had created on my computer, and which I and Levels 1, 2, and 3 had been using for 4 weeks, to try to install was corrupted in some way. We couldn't install it directly from the website, because it would always crash the computer. The USB install we had been trying to install had never completely downloaded, but still showed as though it was complete. Everybody thought it was fine because it showed fine.

    The level 3 tech helped me clean up my operating system, updating 19 drivers, (which I think was actually mostly responsible for screwing up my computer and the auto install in the first place) and addressing some of the errors which showed up in the computer logs after attempts to do certain procedures would fail.

    How I was able to install PPP CS5.5 was to use a combination of some of your advice about compatibility, which I had totally forgotten about over the years, and troubleshooting on my own. I installed it from the disk, and it crashed each time after trying all the usual options available. It passed the tests for program compatibility, but still crashed after trying to install using Windows 7, and Windows 8 compatibility. It got very close several times but would always crash before completing. Once at 99%.  Since it was getting close, I decided to try to install it in pieces. There are 3 parts to the program, as I'm certain you know. Premiere Pro CS5.5, Encore CS5.1, and On Location. I decided to install only 2 of them, one at a time, and leaving On location out because I have no use for it. PPP CS5.5 crashed without any compatibility assist, and also crashed with Windows 7 compatibility, but it installed with Windows 8 compatibility. So, I tried to install Encore CS5.1 with Windows 8 compatibility, and it crashed. Went back and tried it with Windows 7 compatibility and it installed. This is why it wouldn't install everything all at the same time. Each part needed a different compatibility setting.

    I started up the program with the project I'd been working on at the time it finally crashed. I've only one problem, which I know about, yet to solve. Although all my clips are in their proper places on the timeline, only my GoPro video clips (MP4) appear, and run perfectly well. All of my MTS (AVCHD) video clips only show the "Media Ofline" red screen. I attempted a "Media Link" procedure, but it came back with "Unsupported file compression." I saw that once many years ago, and with a little reminder from my Microsoft Computer Engineer son, we finally realized there must be a codec missing on my computer for this type of video file.

    So, once I'm able to locate the right codec from a safe website, I'll be able to determine if my last 4 weeks of attempts to get back to video editing can continue.

    John, I hope this information might help someone else having the same predicament.

    This is the only site I would use. I screwed up. I forgot the URL she gave me, and just using www. with the name of the app.com, ended up with my browser locked up.  You know the one, your computer has locked up to prevent further damage. Please call Microsoft support at ____________ for help with this problem. DO NOT SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER. That required my latest clean install to get rid of.

    I felt it was necessary to give an update. Eight weeks ago I began to have computer problems which I linked with the time when Microsoft was attempting to make an automatic upgrade of my Windows 10 software, to the Fall creators update.

    During the past eight weeks I worked with Microsoft solve my computer problems. Basically my computer would crash and restart every time the attempt to install the Windows 10 update, and ultimately fail. Therefore my computer would crash approximately 10 times a day while I was working on it. My primary work on it is editing video using Adobe Premiere  Pro CS5.5. The crashes accelerated over time, and I was elevated from Level 1 support at Microsoft, through Level 2 and for the past 3 weeks I've been working with the nice people at Level 3. Many many hours were spent with them troubleshooting. I estimate close to 25 hours over the eight week period.

    To shorten the story, the problems were finally solved and had very little to do with the Windows 10 Fall Upgrade. We found out one of my three internal hard drives was failing, and of the four 8gb RAM sticks in my machine, only two of them were functioning. I also had 19 software drivers which were either old, or ancient, and those were all updated. I now have three new hard drives, all 32gb of new RAM, and when I reinstalled all of my programs, I was able to install Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 with no problems at all and it now works perfectly. Since it is older software, I have switched over to a new Video editing software called Cyberlink Power Director Suite 6, and I enjoy it much more than CS5.5. If Adobe still offered the software for sale, I'd stay with it, but I'm not willing to pay that much per month for something I can buy with no monthly fees. The one I use now does way more than my trusty old Premiere Pro CS5.5.

    ?? Cyberlink Power Director Suite 6 has monthly and yearly lease plans. Where do you find purchase plans?

    Two ideas that MAY work to install and/or run old programs in Windows 10

    -RIGHT click the program icon or EXE and select a compatibility mode in the pop up option window

    -or Run as Administrator http://forums.adobe.com/thread/969395 to assign FULL Windows permissions may help... says Encore, but sometimes required for ALL Adobe programs (this is NOT the same as using an Administrator account)

    The above may or may not work... owners of old programs simply have problems with Windows 10... none of which is Adobe's fault... Adobe did not change your old program to make it stop working... Microsoft changed their operating system and THAT is why your old program won't work, not because of anything Adobe did... Also... every time Microsoft issues a Win10 update, there is the risk that an old program that HAS been working after the initial Win10 upgrade will STOP working... bottom line, old programs require a matching old operating system
