How to change video transitions to show with black backgrounds not transparent?

I'm not sure if it's because I switched from a Mac to Windows, or it is the 2017 update, however, video transitions would always show a black background. Now when editing they show transparent making it difficult to see the transition. When I encode the videos they display with a black background as expected. Please help me make them black again.

Click the wrench at the bottom right corner of the Program Monitor and from the drop down menu toggle off (uncheck) Transparency Grid:

There are two types of dissolves|:

cross dissolve and dip to black

cross dissolve is transparent, dip to black is what is says: it dips to black in the middle of the transition.

For cross dissolve it also depends if it is use single sided or double sided and if its on V1 with no layers underneath (just showing a black void) or on higher tracks.
