Premiere Pro crashes at open "old" project / create new sequence

Dear community,

Two days ago I ran into a weird issue;

When I open a PP 2018 project (one saved and edited before in PP 2018) or in a new project create a new sequence, the program hangs and reports that it stopped working.

So I installed PP 2017 and created, edited and rendered (with AME 2017) a project.

Yesterday I wanted to make another video, but now the exact same thing happened with PP 2017?

So I started working through solutions I've read here on the forums.

Important note: I'm running on Windows 10 on this machine

I've did / tried the following so far:

  • Sign out / sign in at the Adobe CC client
  • Cleared Media caches
  • Assigned a new cache directory
  • Updated my video driver (Nvidia 390.65)
  • Removed PP 2018 (inc prefs)
  • Installed PP 2017
  • Created, edited, and rendered with PP 2017 / AME 2017
  • Create a new project in both 2017 / 2018
  • Disabled CUDA acceleration

So I thought; start from scratch:

  • Used Display Driver Uninstaller to remove all the NVidia drivers
  • Installed an earlier version of the NVidia drivers (Version 388.71 and 388.59)
  • Re-install PP 2018 and cleared prefs

Same issue...

I've rendered over 100 video's in December on this laptop without any issues.
(did 1080p30, 1080p60 and 4K30 projects on nearly a daily base)

Now that I'm on holiday and want to edit some nice material to show the family back home it just....

Doesn't work all the sudden

And interesting thing to note; After Effects works fine both in edit and render!

Short specs:

Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit

CPU: Intel Core i7 6600U @ 2.50GHz

RAM: 16,0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 797MHz

Graphics: 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M (ForceWare version: 390.65) SLI Disabled

Anyone got any other ideas / suggestions?

Update:

Tested a project which made PP crash and opening it in AME.
Currently it's rendering without any issues with CUDA enabled (H264 1080p 60fps, Target 40Mbps Max 62,50 Mbps)

Update regarding a test with AME

Thanks to the great help of Sebastian (Adobe) we figured out what caused the issue;

My laptop has 2 videocards;
An Intel one and an NVidia one.

PP uses both cards, even while using the powerful NVidia one for rendering.

The Intel one is still being used for UI and preview building.

As I normally don't run any heavy applications with the Intel card, I never really thought of the driver of that card.

I always updated my NVidia driver, after updating the Intel driver I can again open "old" projects, create new sequences etc.

We did some tests and it was working again!

Hi chromeeh,

I am sorry that you are facing trouble using Premiere Pro on your Win 10 machine.

  • Do you have administrative rights on this computer?
  • Do you have any other Adobe app installed? If so, is this issue specific to Premiere Pro or happening with all?
  • Is there any 3rd party plugins/effects installed on your computer?

Please let us know the status of your issue & we will try to help.

Thanks,

Kulpreet Singh

Hi Kulpreet,

To answer your questions in order:

  1. Yes, I tried running PP both with and without elevated rights
  2. Yes, I have After Effects, Photoshop and InDesign installed as well, and they all seem to work fine
  3. No, I'm using online the build in effects / plugins

Earlier this afternoon I've tried making a new project, importing the media from a project that did work last week.
And after a minute or so PP gave a crash again.

If I open the same project in AME it'll render without any issues.

(The render I posted earlier about in my edit ended up fine)
