Speed Grade does no open Premiere Project

I tried opening a project saved in the new 2017 update for premiere. It told me on speed grade that the saved file was too new for speed grade to open it. What can I do?

PrPro and SpeedGrade had a "Direct Link" connection process up through PrPro 2015.2 and SpeedGrade 2015.1, the "9.x" build series for each program.

Unfortunately, the Adobe PrPro development team (which also over-sees SpeedGrade) decided to remove the code for the "Direct Link" process from PrPro 2015.3, when they started the new major version 10.x build series, and not to update SpeedGrade.

This means the last pairing that "officially" works is the 2015.2 PrPro and 2015.1 SpeedGrade.

The official suggestions as to colorist work in PrPro projects now are ... 1) use Lumetri/Color workspace in PrPro (very useful for some things, not well suited for shot-matching many clips or those which need multiple HSL secondaries); 2) flatten your sequence in PrPro, then export a video track in a codec that Speedgrade can read in "native" stand-alone mode, grade in Sg, export that  sequence, import the graded video into your PrPro project and replace the "flattened" video track; 3) export an EDL and flattened media file to work in Sg, export back out of SpeedGrade, then re-conform back in PrPro; 4) export an XML file and media list from PrPro, import/conform into another grading app like Resolve, then again ... do the whole round-trip thing.

There are some smaller projects I happily work in Lumetri within PrPro. I've found that using a Tangent Ripple or Elements control surface makes Lumetri actually a decently fast and far more intuitive working space than using a mouse/keyboard combination, and at $350 USD, the Ripple will save you so much time so fast it pays for itself in a few jobs.

That said, shot-matching a bunch of shots (think a wedding!) or working with things that need critical matching or 'fixing' requiring multiple HSL secondaries ... you can technically do this in Lumetri, but it has several drawbacks in workflow from which way you modify "earlier" Lumetri applicactions to the way it drags many computers to a crawl.

If you are on a PC, there is a manual method to "hack" the header of a PrPro 2017 (11.x) project file so that it can be worked in SpeedGrade 2015.1, as long as you don't have any AE "comps" on the sequence. (If so, export a standard media clip out of AE to replace the comp on the PrPro timeline.)

And "fellow" user Patrick Zadrobiliek has created a little app for the process, it automates the conversion both so that SpeedGrade 2015.1 can open a PrPro 2017 project file, and after saving your work from Sg, re-converts the file so it is again "native" to PrPro 2017.

Here's the thread on this forum where I re-visit the manual hack with PrPro 2017 and Sg 2015.1 ...

Direct Link manual Hack for PrPro 2017/SpeedGrade 2015.1

And here's a thread on here about Patrick's little conversion app ... and I don't get a dime. I've used it, and it works great for me.

From what I can see Speedgrade is a product without a future, and people that want/need its features should stop using Premiere Pro  and go elsewhere. I say this because I believe its the only way Premiere Pro would ever get "Speedgrade" back is for people to stop using Premiere Pro(preferably be vocal about it), if there is one thing all companies(Adobe included) don't like is to lose money, as it is now Adobe earns more because they don't use money on SG and still have their customers. The reason for me being here is that i was trying to test SG, it wouldn't work so i came here.

PS! I will still pay for Creative Cloud, I don't use SG and i doubt I miss it.

You may be right ... or not. The "Official Status" is "hiatus". I had that explained to me at Adobe MAX in November ... with the example of Audition, which was on hiatus for like two or three build cycles while they thought about dumping or rebuilding. And for that app, they clearly (finally) decided to rebuild.

Which ... could happen with Sg. Much as I've loved that cranky and ... unique ... interface, and what I could do with it, it is time for it to get a complete rebuild to move forward. It looks like they're trying to see if the Lumetri panel in PrPro is adequate for a large section of the user-base.

For many simple things, Lumetri works fine. For more extensive things ... or if you need shot-matching ... it sucks, at least as far as being able to do such work easily & quickly. Round-tripping to Resolve has a lot of pains compared to the "Direct to Sg" workflow of the previous CC versions, sadly.

Which is why I still use Sg via Patrick Zadrobilek's Ntown Productions "PrProBCC" app, so I can use the 2017 PrPro along with Sg 2015.1.

So absolutely pissed off right now. I was trained and relying on this software to support a client and now I can't use it in my workflow.

Why would you cultivate such a versatile and awesome tool set and then dismantle it so people can't use it in ways that works well?

    Idiotic.

This is one of a thousand other issues that being a CC subscriber has caused - your updates ruin workflows. IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING and GREEDY.

I'd be much happier right now if I had just stayed in CC 2014.

Using automatic scene detection on Lynda.com: basically render lossless sequence, import mov in SpeedGrade, click Scene Change Detect and you should figure out the rest yourself.

But yea - I just got full CC and was disappointed: I can't Direct Link my PrPro work in SpeedGrade.

I understand the whole bummer thing about the dis-connection of PrPro & Sg. Somehow, the Adobe PrPro team just didn't do it like I wanted. I just don't understand!

At least ... if you're on a PC, you can still normally work in "Direct Link" mode by using either a manual modification of one number in the prproj project file so that SpeedGrade 2015.1 will see it as an appropriate version file, or use Patrick Zadrobilek's app from his Ntown site that simply automates the process ... nicely.

The two links in my reply above are to first, a thread on this forum where I list the manual process, and the link to another thread about Patrick's PrPro-BCC app as he calls it. While not an "officially approved" process, it does work quite well for most PC users, and at least prior to 2017 the manual process worked for Mac users.

I use Patrick's app a lot. I'm actually quite good and fast within Lumetri in PrPro, but ... my tastes and needs oft have me doing things past what Lumetri can do, or at least, do well and fast. Then, I go through Pat's little app to SpeedGrade, which I love to work in.
