Subscription Model

I would like to propose that Adobe would consider, at the the very least, a discounted annual subscription fee for users (especially long time users) who have chosen not to update the apps that they using.

I greatly appreciate the features available to me although, for many of us, the vast majority of new updates do not apply to our workflow. In the past, we would only update (purchase a hard copy) when updates were relevant to our needs. Today, we are required to purchase the apps that we use on a yearly basis regardless of whether or not we use the latest features offered.

A more neuanced subscription model would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps long time users could graduate into lower annual fees?

I hope that Adobe might take this into consideration.

Gratefully,

- Nathan

adobe doesn't view non-current software as something they like offering even at a full rate.  ie, adobe doesn't support any versions other than the current and 1 previous version even for full paying subscribers.  so, it's not conceivable adobe would offer the same users that pay less than a full subscription rate.

but if you want to make that suggestion to adobe, feel free if you can find a spot.

for applicable apps, you can make (some) suggestions to adobe here, https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/x-productkb/global/how-to-user-voice.html

The path you suggest does not seem like one that would improve Adobe's profits. I think if Adobe look into this at all, it will be to compel you to update.

Fair question. However, you're focussing solely on not needing new or enhanced features as a reason not to pay the full monthly fee.

However, the ongoing updates also include bugfixes and crucial security patches.

A fee of any kind must imply ongoing support and updates. That will be both a legal requirement and end user expectation. Besides, Adobe is not going to allow your device to be hacked due to a security hole in an ancient app which was patched years ago. That's not feasible or tolerable for any vendor. In such a scenario, there could be a dozen or more major versions to support. Needless to say, that won't happen.

Adobe supports the current version - with new features / bugfixes / security patches - and the major version immediately prior with bugfixes / security patches.

Thank you for your thoughtful responses. Your points along with those also raised by @Nancy OShea and @kglad are understandable. I recognize that there is a lot involved in making things function well and securly on the cloud.

At the risk of sounding like a curmugeon, I guess the core of my question remains though. Why not allow users to decide for themselves when to update their apps, especially if they have also chosen not to update their OS? If user security is a concern, a disclaimer about using old versions would suffice to protect Adobe from liability.

To better illustrate my point, I recognize and accept that the car that I purchased in 2009 is not as safe nor reliable as the latest model but I own it. Furthermore, I don't suspect the public would appreciate automakers removing the option to purchase a car outright and instead requiring that drivers lease for life instead. In like manner, the subscription model costs users a great deal more over the course of a career than it once did. I know several people who still use old versions on old machines without issue. Sure there is risk involved, bugs, etc. but the older versions still serve them well. I only wish that Adobe would allow users the freedom to make these decisions for themselves.

I mean no disrespect by any of this. Just trying to better understand Adobe's reasoning and air my thoughts on the off chance that they're shared by others.

Adobe doesn't want users to keep using unsupported apps for security reasons.  They prefer you to upgrade to the latest software & apps to remain compatible with modern operating systems. The majority of subscribers expect compatilibty.  Nothing less will do.
