Question

How to copy MXF files that span 2 cards

I understand that the work flow for importing P2 media is to copy the entire directory to your media drive and the clips should then show up in media browser as actual clips rather than individual MXF files. I have had success doing this in the past. I believe there was a bug that prevented this from working for a revision or two and was fixed very recently (correct me if I'm wrong) so that this workflow should now be working.

HOWEVER, we have a Panasonic camera that uses two P2 cards. If one card runs out of space while recording, it will automatically switch over to the other card and continue recording. SO, we often have media files spanning 2 cards. According to this support document (last paragraph): "If the group of spanned clips itself spans two P2 or XDCAM EX cards, copy the full directory trees from them both to same-level folders on the hard disk before importing."

THE QUESTION IS how do you do that? If you have 2 identical directory sctructures, copying the second one to the save level will overwrite the first. What I was doing was to create 2 directories labelled "F" and "G" and copying the CONTENTS folders (as well as LASTCLIP.TXT) into each of them. I also tried merging them all the MXF files into the same contents/video folder, but niether of those schemes worked. When I go to import, I can only see the individual MXF files, not the complete media icon.

Am I doing this wrong? Or is the bug that prevented this from working still afoot? Or what?

Hi Fred,

This should work as you expect, that is, when importing card based media into the Media Browser. If you have already updated to the newest version of Premiere Pro (14.0.1), and it is still not working, I would try importing your clip in an earlier version of Premiere Pro. The bug affecting card based media might not be fixed yet. Sorry for the frustration.

Thank You,
Kevin

Thanks for addressing that part of the question, but that wasn't really the main question I was asking. The question is this:

When copying media that spans 2 P2 cards to a media drive, how do you copy both directory structures? Do you make 2 new folders at the same level, one for each? Is that the workflow that should result in the ability to import the full video clips via the media browser (as opposed to individual mxf files)? If so, does it matter what you name the folders? If not, how is it supposed to be done?
