Adobe DC Pro crashes on text type in Fill and Sign

New Here ,

The issue occurs when I open a PDF, click Fill and Sign, choose the Text box tool and click to place it. The text box field appears and then, with a degree of randomness, typing the first few letters of almost anything, Adobe freezes and crashes completely.

I would be happy to gather troubleshooting data for any Adobe tech monitoring this question and provide it quickly.

Hi bscottg,

Sorry for the delay in response.

As per the issue description mentioned above, Acrobat is freezing and crashing when typing text in fill and sign, is that correct?

Could you check if an update is available for Acrobat using "Check for updates" option under "Help" menu,  You may also download updates from here: Adobe software and product updates

Reboot the machine after installing update and try again.

Is there any error message when Acrobat crashes?

Does this happen with specific pdf file? Have you tried with another pdf file to check if its not a file specific issue?

Also, let us know dot version of Acrobat and the operating system installed on the machine? You may refer to the steps given in this link on how to check the version in Acrobat: Identify the product and its version for Acrobat and Reader DC

Let us know if you need any help.

Hello,

That is correct. Most of the time it crashes and acrobat closes, no error message.

We updated to version 2019.008.20080 and it says that there are no additional updates available.

Thanks

Hi b scottg,

Could you try rebooting the machine once if you haven't already and check if that resolves the issue?

Also, try updating acrobat to the latest patch using "Check for updates" option under "Help" menu,  You may also download updates from here: Adobe software and product updates Reboot the machine after installing update and try again.

Also, try replicating the issue in a new user account and check if issue still persists. If yes, try following troubleshooting steps:

1- Download and run cleaner tool on the machine to uninstall Acrobat: Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs

2- Reboot the machine

3- Download and install Acrobat from here: Download and install Acrobat DC subscription

4- Reboot the machine again and check.

Thanks,

Shivam

I also have this issue but for Adobe's fixing purposes:  Using Fill & Sign tool causes Adobe to crash without an error message.  It just closes.  (I have the most recent version of Adobe, I have rebooted, I changed my password, I attempted to change user preferences).

I did not have this issue the first 3-4 times I used Fill & Sign. I send out a form to customers and customers send it back - sometimes they send it back with all formfields closed, and then I use the Fill & Sign tool to fill in sections that my company uses internally.

The more times I've done this (5), the more frequently adobe crashes.  Usually within a few characters, but immediately on the most recent form, using the third field I fill out.  The entry's first letter matches the first letter of three other forms' entries to the same field.  This lends some credence to Acrobat DC Fill and Sign feature crashes program. which the solution is to past text into the fill&sign fields and has stopped the crashing.

Also on that thread is an Adobe response to try resetting preferences.  Under Preferences > Forms I turned off "automatically calculate  field values" clicked "Okay" (exiting preferences) and the setting does not appear to save.  I went back to preferences immediately and it has been turned back on.  I tried exiting out of Adobe immediately and then re-entering and it turned back on.

Issue One: The automatic calculation of field values appears to crash Adobe when using Fill&Sign)

Issue Two: Preference setting to not automatically calculate field values does not save and turns back on.

Hi infolabuser,

Try following troubleshooting steps:

1- Login to https://cloud.acrobat.com/  with same id you logged in on Reader/Acrobat.

2- Click on your name in top right corner , drop down list will appear. Then click on ‘Settings’.

3- Now, a dialog will appear. You can uncheck 1st option "Suggest words or phrases..".

4- Press Done. Your settings will get saved.

5- Relauch the appication and check.

Thanks,

Shivam

Hi Shivam,

I had the same issue and used this to get around it. Any update on when the bug will be fixed so that I can turn back on "suggest words or phrases"? I have just committed to a year of monthly subscription fees and would like to utilize all the services I'm paying for.

Cheers,

Gordon

Exact same problem here. Appears to happen when a suggestion box is being drawn and it breaks the taskbar line at the bottom of the screen.

This is useless and does nothing to rectify the issue of Adobe crashing when attempting to use Fill and Sign

Have you found the solution to this problem? Scott?

Sorry for posting in here though I don't know where to post.

I can get into fill & sign. I can also used shapes like circle, check mark, a cross, whatever. When I click the Text typing feature and click anywhere on the pdf space, it suddenly freezes.

What's weird is that some other time I got the 0x0000 memory could not be read error. I haven't been getting that message after I followed some instructions online about the windows update. But I still couldn't update the texts in the pdfs.

I have to edit forms from several companies, a lot of them work fine. Only 2 companies' PDF failed to be edited on here. I can slowly edit them in the slower computer though. (The Adobe version is exact same)

Hi there,

We are sorry for the trouble. As described Acrobat DC freezes while using fill and sign. Is this a behavior with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs? Please try to fill and sign a different PDF file.

What is the version of the Acrobat DC  and the OS you are using? To check the version please use the link (https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/identify-product-version.html). Make sure you have the latest version 20.006.20034. Go to Help > Check for Updates.

You may also try the steps provided in the links below and see if that helps

(https://helpx.adobe.com/in/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-system-errors-freezes-mac.html) for Mac Os

(https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-system-errors-freezes-windows.html) for Windows Os.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks.

Had the same problem.  Circumvented as follows:  First only placed signatures and saved, Then started with opening one text field, then typed the first letter, waited, typed a space (waiting in fear the Adobe to freeze), typed the second character (non space), then slowly and with waits typed the other characters, it did not crash, now I could arrow back and backspace delete the extra spaces I used earlier, did not crash.  Sounds silly but with patience it worked.  ( may not work for you obviously if you are in a hurry).  Keep clicking on save after each successful step so that little progress you may have made will not be lost next time you open your document.  So, this is not a solution but I hope Adobe can fix that bug soon.

Hi @stevenf94502886

Hope you are doing well and sorry to hear that

Is this an issue with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs? Please try with a different PDF file and check. If the file is stored on a shared network/drive please download it to your computer locally and then try again.

What is the version of the Acrobat DC you are using? To check the version go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure you have the recent version 22.3.20281 (Mac) or 22.3.20282 (Win) installed. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Also try to repair the installation from the help menu (Win Only) and see if that works.

Please try to reset the Acrobat preferences as described here https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/how-to-reset-acrobat-preference-settings-to-defau...

You may also try to create a new test user profile with full admin rights in Win or enable the root account in MAC and try using the application there and check.

Regards

Amal

Fill & Sign is causing Acrobat to CRASH! I've installed and reinstalled it several times. I've run credential manager, and I've used different PDF files, including trying to build a new one. NOTHING WORKS!!!!!! I will delete and cancel my subscription next if this isn't fixed.
