Question

Premiere Pro and After Effects not working together anymore

Right, I've got an odd and really annoying issue, was wondering if someone could potentially help me out with it.

The main issues are as follows:

1. In Premiere Pro, I used "Replace with After Effects composition" a few times and it worked perfectly fine. But now whenever I open the PP project, it has all the compositions from AE offline and whenever I try to link them, it gets stuck on this screen:

http://i.imgur.com/fKDFUyC.png This window also pops up whenever I try importing a .AEP file into the project. RARELY will it say at he bottom "Failed to connect to Dynamic Link server", but that is very rare and has only happened once.

It is stuck their forever until I press Cancel, usually re-linking the media works instantly. This window pops up afterwards:

I've tried this is blank projects, making new .AEP files and importing it, nothing works and I cannot re-link the AE compositions.

2. If I try right clicking a clip and selecting "Replace with After Effects Composition" I get the error message below:

This is a flat out lie since AE is installed. Again, this happens on newly created Premiere Pro files.

3. This problem is more recent but it's pretty bad and frankly stupid. The programs don't like being ran side by side. If I launch After Effects, it loads up no issue but then if I launch Premiere Pro afterwards, it hangs (and eventually crashes) at the Splash screen.

If I do it the other way round (Launch Premiere Pro first and then After Effects), After Effects does not display itself, but appears in Task Manager as running and constantly taking up 15% CPU.

I've tried the following with no success:

Reinstalling both programs

Clearing any kind of temp/cache files they have

Launching without using Mercury GPU support

Updating GPU drivers

Disabling all Non-Windows services from running

Install earlier versions of 2017 AE and PP (went about 3 updates back)

Disabled my AV and Firewall, created rules that do not block either program from working fully

Now here is the funny thing, all of these issue that I've described to you above DOES NOT HAPPEN WHEN RUNNING IN SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING, so I have no idea how to further isolate what might be causing the problems.

My basic specs:

OS is Windows 10 Pro

i7 @ 4.7Ghz

16GB RAM @3000Mhz

1080 TI

250GB SSD (OS drive)

500GB M.2 SSD (Program/Game drive)

1TB HDD (Older programs games)

1TB HDD (Used for video editing and Game capture)

I am frankly stuck on what to do, I am unsure if there is a service/driver that is messing it up, I don't want to format my machine as I do not think it if needed (Works in Safe mode after all). I can install the 2015 versions and work with them for the moment. But a Project I made is in 2017 I will now need to render the AE compositions and replace the clips in Premiere Pro with them.

Hi Dominic0904,

Sorry for your issue!

I've come across similar threads that report on dynamic link issues. It looks like we're hitting a bug of some kind as I'm able to repro this on my Windows 10 machine (partially at least). I'm keeping a close eye on this issue.

Unfortunately, I don't have a fix for you right now! What works for me is to keep both Premiere Pro and After Effects running simultaneously.

I'll let you know if I find any fix/workaround.

Thanks for your patience!

Hi Rameez,

Thank you for your reply, as mentioned before I cannot run the programs side by side because of issue number 3:

"3. This problem is more recent but it's pretty bad and frankly stupid. The programs don't like being ran side by side. If I launch After Effects, it loads up no issue but then if I launch Premiere Pro afterwards, it hangs (and eventually crashes) at the Splash screen.

I have gotten around the issue by rendering out the Compositions as .mp4s and replaced the AE Compositions in Premiere Pro with them instead. I am going to install CC 2015 and see if that works better as I really need to get something working.

I look forward to reading your fix/workaround.

Dominic

This issue is a big mess for cross-work PrPro/Ae ... although one suggestion I might have would be to use Cineform, DNxHD/R, or ProRes over an MP4 for a render-out/replace-clip process. Personal preference perhaps.

Have you used the Adobe CC Cleaner Tool to remove both programs? They do put various files that can cause this kind of issue around the computer, past the program files & standard cache files. If you don't get those other files, you don't get anything from an uninstall ... it looks to those files if they exist and sets up accordingly.

For the kind of troubles you're having, I'd run the Adobe CC Cleaner Tool and have it take out PrPro, AfterEffects, and the CC desktop app itself. That could also be a problem area. When running the "Tool", it opens in a DOS style window, with numeric options among lists. It looks startling when it asks if you want to remove what appear to be groups of programs, but you click through those and you winnow down to specific programs.

After rebooting, download a fresh copy of the Adobe CC app, then after installing that, download fresh copies of PrPro & AE.

Hi Neil,

Afraid that did not work. I tried it two ways, first by launching the CC Cleaner Tool and removing all CC 2017 products and then uninstalling them along with the CC App.

The second way was by uninstalling all CC programs (and then App) and then using the CC Cleaner tool, but this time it did not show any of my CC products (I assumed it would shown the same programs due to leftover files), I just let it clean whatever was available.

Neither of these did the trick, still the same issues persist. It's odd though, PP and AE seem to still have my preferences/layouts & recent files listed, even though I said to remove App Preferences.

Any more advice of this issue? It's really bugging up my workflow. I might need to move to CC 2015 because of this.

Are the preferences for both apps someplace you've set them, or in the standard locations for the apps? The one thing that might be an issue is Ae apparently has some setting that won't allow it to use cache & such files if they're set to the root of a drive ... and that has "caused" some of the mogrt issues, when people stored their mogrts in a folder directly under the root.

Other than that ... at this point, RameezKhan or maybe Szalam might be able to puzzle this out.
