I created a PDF using Adobe and when I saved it, some letters throughout the file convered to boxes with X's. I have been searching and have not had success, particularly because the new version of Adobe doesn't have the recommended options visible in tools. To be clear, the orignal document I am editing is a PDF -- The problem occurred when saving the PDF -- as a PDF using Adobe. The document has not been converted or exported. How can I get back the original text, removing these boxes with X's?

Hi, with the update to Adobe Acrobat, preflight is no longer an option to select. I searched for it and selected it and it said it was downloading, but nothing happened. I tried it multiple times. I still need more help, and for the most current version of Adobe Acrobat.

Preflight is still there in the new "modern" Acrobat. It's just hidden by the brainiacs that created "modern" Acrobat's new confusing user interface.

From the left side's toolbar, scroll down and select Use Print Production. (I know, not the best name for this feature, but then again I doubt the folks who created this new interface have a clue what these tools really do.)

From there, select Preflight. Unfortunately, the new interface design changed where the settings are for this procedure, so follow what's below:

  • Change Preflight to show the correct set of tools you need to use. From the top drop-down menu (1), select PDF Standards (2).

Preflight with New Acroba 2023Preflight with New Acroba 2023

  • Switch to the blue wrench at the top of the dialogue (3). Then locate the Document section and Embed fonts in that section. (4)
  • Click the blue wrench tool at the bottom right to Fix the fonts issue. (5)

Hope this helps.

Thank you, I thought I was getting somewhere! Unfortunately, Preflight is not responding. It says "unable to copy the user specific texts".

Hi Bevi! I finally was able to go through this process, but unfortunately, it did not resolve the issue. If you have any other ideas, I'd appreciate it.

Hi Amal,

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, neither of those recommendations solved the issue. Please keep in mind that this was a created PDF; it was not exported from another file type.

Thanks!

Hi there

Would you mind sharing the screenshot of the error message for more clarity? Also, go through the correct answer marked in the similar discussion https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/preflight-error-unable-to-copy-the-user-specific-... and see if that helps.
