1) macOS:

Adobe Reader DC 21.007.20099 does not handle correctly retina resolution when displaying a PDF containing  a 3D annotation when OpenGL 1.4 is used. When the software rendering  is used, there is no problem but we loose hardware acceleration and advanced effects. When the hardware acceleration is used, the viewport is divided by two.

With Adobe Reader 20.013.20064 everything works correctly.

The only way to prevent this issue and keep OpenGL 1.4 is to run Adobe Reader with the low resolution option enabled on the application, but the interface is blurred and not pleasant to use.

This issue is detected on :

  • Macbook pro 2019 16 Intel/ OSX 10.15.7
  • Macbook pro 2018 Intel / OSX 11.6.1
  • Macbook pro 2019 Intel/ OSX 12.0.1
  • Mac mini m1 Apple Silicon/OSX 11.6.1

Strangely with a macbook pro 2018 and 10.14.6, there is no issue.

2) Windows

The 64 bit version of Adobe Reader does not provide hardware acceleration. Only the software mode is available. With the 32 bit version of Adobe Reader DC, we can have access to the DirectX hardware acceleration

Attached to this post, there is a simple 3D PDF that shows the issue
