Error message: Adobe Acrobat Reader DC could not open because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example it was sent as an email attachment and was not decoded)
You can "try" to save the pdf attachment first before opening it in Reader but most of the time, that doesn't make a difference. It will confirm that the file is being corrupted by the email though and not by some process involved in opening it from your email client.
If you use Microsoft OneDrive and you're seeing this, open OneDrive and see if the issue goes away.
I was seeing this issue on a LOT of my PDF files and I was freaking out because these are my important files. When I opened a command prompt to look at the files with the DIR command I noticed that the "damaged" files had their file sizes in parentheses. I googled that and found that onedrive files that are not locally stored on the computer show their sizes in parentheses like this. So I opened

I'm not convinced this is a OneDrive issue. My Adobe files (hundreds of them) have worked just fine up until today. Incidentally, my laptop ran a Windows Update earlier this week. Hmmm... coincidence? I think not.
Anyway, my Adobe files have always been stored on an external hard drive, and any time I need one of them I've been able to open them without issue - several times, as each document contains hand-written burial records I am digitizing. I've opened every one of these files several times over the past year and they all opened just fine... until today. I get that error message on every single Adobe file I attempt to open, whether it is stored on OneDrive, my external hard drive, or a flash drive. I even have a screenshot of Adobe's RECENT FILES that were opened within the past month, and even trying to open them from the RECENT FILES does not work. So I don't believe this is a OneDrive issue, I believe it is a Microsoft/Windows issue. Anyone else having this problem outside of OneDrive?

Turns out this was caused by the Windows/Adobe update that automatically installed on my laptop on October 19th. Once I uninstalled Adobe and the Windows Update from 10/19, then downloaded SmallPDF and used my corporate log in, all my files can now be opened using Small PDF.

Thank you. Today I paid for the year version of Adobe Acrobat Pro and because I had files on my OneDrive that were not recently updated on this laptop I was getting this error messages when I would open files. After I went back into OneDrive it updated the folder in Windows and then it finally worked for all of my "corrupted" files.
Thanks for the help!!!

This is happening to one of my teachers (I am an IT Tech) to Adobe files she created. The ones she created at home can be opened. The ones she created today, at school, say they are damaged....It makes no sense.

I am having this same issue with some of my fies that i created weeks ago. They arent opening in Illustrator either and this is never the case. I tested and saved a file just now the same way and it opened fine so i dont know what's the issue. See screenshot attached. I'm a graphic designer and i can't have this happening as i would have to recreate all these graphics
