Adobe Acrobat Reader is *incredibly* slow & keeps hanging - AGAIN!!

Since the release 24.003.20054, Adobe Reader is AGAIN running slow again opening documents

Does anyone know why Adobe Acrobat Reader is so *incredibly* slow & keeps hanging please?

I keep getting the 'not responding' message; have to close it down & try again.

Documents load *really* slowly, if at all!

I have a fast PC with 32 GB of memory, so that shouldn't be the problem...

The previous 'fix' at here no longer works !!

Any ideas on speeding it up please?

When I updated to Windows 11 Pro v 24H2 Build(26100.2454), the problem (for me) no longer occurs.

Whether its the OS upgrade or something Adobe have fixed I can't really say

Hello!

To fix the performance issue, please try the suggestions:

  • Update the app to the latest version: Go to Menu (Windows) or Acrobat (Mac) > Help > Check for updates, install any pending updates, and then restart the app and the machine.
  • Open the app Preferences (Menu > Preferences, or Ctrl+K / Cmd+K) > go to Reading > Screen Reader Options and choose "Only read the currently visible pages " to stop the "Preparing document for reading ".
  • In the same Preferences window, go to > Page Display > Rendering, turn off Smooth Line Art and Smooth Images. Click Ok, restart the app, and check the performance.

You can also repair the app’s installation files from Menu > Help > Repair installation. Restart the app and the machine.

If Acrobat crashes or hangs, please collect and share the following information:

Thanks,

Anand Sri.

I'm also seeing several reports of this after the recent update, so it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. I'd recommend trying a Reader repair, checking whether the issue occurs with all PDFs, and testing with Protected Mode or cloud features disabled to narrow down the cause. If nothing helps, it's likely a bug in the current release, so reporting it to Adobe and watching for an update may be the best option.

I have had the same problem…  went through the process of checking protected mode at startup, and protected view, only to find they were already off ( presumably I had already checked this before due to performance issues)

I then decided to check in the Security settings ( not the Advanced  option) and turned off the Security option…  Voila!!!  all fixed.

I don’t think the OS has anything to do with this problem…   my Windows is 11Pro 25H2 (Build 26200.8737

The "not responding" hangs on heavier files usually come down to how the reader loads a big document. The general PDF tools I have tested tend to choke on a big document, so they freeze on open and then stutters when you move around the page.

If you just need to read and mark up without the hangs, there are a few solid alternatives people in here already mention. (Disclosure: one of them is mine, so flagging that up front.) I make Ncored, a PDF tool I built as a working architect because the big drawing sets kept stalling. It opens fast and stays smooth on scroll, zoom and pan, handles heavy 50-200 MB+ project sets, runs without a subscription, and is Windows and Mac (Apple Silicon). There is a 14 day free trial, no signup, nothing to enter, if you want to throw a file that normally hangs at it.

After MONTHS of misery opening Adobe files and waiting for them to load, hang or simply not respond, i changed over to Nitro and have never had an issue since.

I think  i will have to do the same. I thought it might have been my computer but got a brand new one last week with Windows 11 Pro and I am still having issues.

Try updating Adobe Reader, disabling protected mode  or reinstalling. Also, check for large PDFs or system resource issues.

Still no better. Document opens but you have a lag until you can work on it.

Are you using the "comment" tool? Acrobat is not ideal for projects that involve a large number of comments.  For those, you may try using a different PDF reader. There are free alternatives if all you need to do is add comments.

Foxit also provides admx/adml GPO templates so you can set the default apps easily, as it used to be in the good old days of Windows 7, before whatever nightmare this is started, obscuring everything, making it nearly impossible for admins to lock systems into a standard setup that everyone could count on.  The goal, if I just interpret the end results, seems to be to reduce productivity and undermine worker comfort and confidence pretty much across the board, while preventing admins from addressing this outside of registry hacks, which won't hold still long enough to really solve anything.  I used to understand that OS's and software were built to increase productivity and ease of use. That clearly is not what drives things anymore.

Adobe must be trying to force everyone to update to pro. Message: "We are experiencing Acrobat Reader download site problems (for months) and are working to resolve the issue." One of the largest software companies in the world having "problems" with their download site for their only free product.
