Adobe reader not opening

New Here ,
Aug 19, 2019 Aug 19, 2019

The only way I can open Reader DC on my Windows 10 pc is by 'START' right click on Reader in the start programme, then RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR.. It will not open from any shortcuts or clicking on any pdf email attachments.

Adobe Reader is my default programme for pdf files. I have uninstalled using the Adobe cleaner tool and re-installed. I have run the compatability check without success.

I have seen a message stating 'Adobe Reader cannot open inside on AppContainer in protected mode due to incompatability with your system configuration'.

I rolled back to a restore point befolre the latest Windows update but that didn't work either.

I am also getting the same problem with PS Elements 11

I have now run out of ideas and am asking for help

Update Aug 20: Wife's machine, same problem, Reader DC not starting. Fix on her desktop was to manually create a new registry Key. I found a sample on another Adobe Forum. I think I wasted a whole bunch of time thrashing around on my desktop and I'm kind of cranky about that.

I created a new Registry entry [based on Adobe forum threads about Protected Mode]

    • HKLM\Software\WOW6432NODE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\DC\
    • New Key = bProtectedMode REG_DWORD  value 0

I also made sure the Reader EXE was set for running as an admin and Compatibility Mode was set for Win8.

Everything OK on both machines this morning.

Not sure if this helps, but here is my tale of woe this morning.

Reader DC fail – Aug 19 2019

  • Reader DC did not work the morning of Aug 19 2019. Both our Win8.1 Dell XPS 8700 64 bit machines. Both were at 2019.012.20036, both running as advertised for months if not years.
  • Desktop icon there, but dead.
  • Clicking on a PDF file had no effect. [non-existent association]
  • Tried uninstalling, hung, said Reader files in use.
    • Discovered later that if you have Chrome windows open, the Reader extension can get in the way of uninstall or repair.
  • Repair did not work, same issue with files in use.
  • Closed all Chrome windows.
  • Decided to use my Revo Uninstaller PRO to repair or uninstall Reader.
  • Same issue with open files when Revo tried running the internal Adobe uninstaller.
  • Used Revo to run a Forced MSI Uninstall.
  • That worked, completed the manual deletes of associated registry entries and folders/files.
  • Downloaded a fresh install of Reader
  • Started the install
  • Disabled Chrome extension install
  • Disabled AV option install
  • Completed the install [2019.012.20036]
    • Did not start Reader from within installer when it finished.
    • Completed a minimal preference setup.
    • Reader DC seems to start ok.
    • PDF file associations ok.
    • ‘Save As’ PDF works ok, including PDF display after save.
  • Warmstarted.
    • All the app icons work.
    • File associations work.
  • Now I'll take a chance and try fixing my wife's machine.
