Adobe sharepoint integration issue: checkout prompt is not working

Hi,

We got the issue, that the checkout prompt is not showing up if a user wants to open a .pdf file directly from a SharePoint library.

If the user opens his local Acrobat Reader and tries "File" -> "Open" ->  "direct URL", the checkout prompt works fine. Trying to check out the file via "Open with Explorer" feature from SharePoint works too. Only the web interface is not working.

What we tried to solve this issue:

Checkout and Open PDF files from SharePoint Document Libraries

1. We checked the DOCICON.xml and edited it to the following:

<Mapping Key="pdf" Value="icpdf.png" EditText="Adobe Acrobat" OpenControl="AdobeAcrobat.OpenDocuments" OpenApp="AcroRd32"/>

We changed this on all servers within our SharePoint farm and did an IIS reset.

2. We have added the PDFFIX.js script under >Template->Layouts (as described in the link above)

3. We run the powershell script as described in the link above.

4. Within SharePoint, documents are forced to open within the client application by default. We checked this on Web Application, Site Collection and library level.

All of this couldn't solve our issue.

Our setup:

SharePoint 2013 on premise

Acrobat Reader XI

Windows 7

Please let us now if we are missing something. The possibility to check out PDF files is important for our users.

Hi yolo44239104,

Thanks for sharing this information.

The SharePoint version (15.0.4571.1502) is more than 3 years old (Reference - SharePoint 2013 Build Numbers and CU’s – Steve Chen [MSFT] Fast Track Esc. Engineer ).  This version has some issues with Adobe Acrobat integration which Microsoft fixed in September 2015 CU.

So we request you to update  your SharePoint Server 2013 setup to September 2015 or later.

Please let us know if you face problem after update.

Thanks,

Acrobat Team

Hi Gagan,

thank you for your response.

  • SharePoint Version : SP2013 (15.0.4571.1502)
  • Authentication protocol: Standard (Claims Based Authentication) -> Negotiate(Kerberos)
  • Adobe Reader XI (11.0.20)
  • Internet Explorer 11 (11.0.9600.18738)
  • We are using an additional PDF reader: Foxit Reader (8.3.1.21155) (I'm not quite sure why)
  • External access is currently not possible

We noticed this issue a couple of weeks ago when we try to implement this feature into our new SP2013 environment. After some research we tried some workarounds, like the workaround mentioned within my first post, but we are not able to get it working.

I'm sure we haven't used it within our previous SP farms.

Thank you for your help!

Same issue here, many years on using Sharepoint 2019. Check Out and Open in Desktop app buttons disappeared recently and never returned.
