I need to save an existing PDF to a newer version.  The existing doc is version 1.3 and I need to save it to version 1.4.  I only have Acrobat Reader, none of the paid software.

What is your problem with version 1.3?

I am trying to upload my 2018 tax return for the PPP loan application, and they only accept v1.4.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

(1)  No, the free Adobe Reader cannot change the PDF version number.

(2)  More importantly, generally when someone or an organization requests a PDF of a particular version, they are indicating what the highest version of PDF they will accept. A PDF 1.3 file will in fact suffice for PDF 1.4 if the file is in fact a valid PDF 1.3 file. The only difference is the version number in the file. PDF 1 4 allows for transparency in the imaging model, but I doubt whether (a) that is something that would be in a tax return and (b) that this would something that the loan provider needs in any way.

Dov,
Thanks for your reply.  However, when I tried to upload the tax return, my Credit Union's website would not accept it, saying it had to be v1.4.  Ridiculous, I know.  The file is only a little more than 6 months old...

You can change the version with Adobe Acrobat.

Try to contact that Credit Union's IT group. Such an automated rejection of a PDF is ridiculous but there isn't anything that Adobe can do to help here when you are dealing with professional incompetence. Sorry! 😞
