Overlapping comments/annotations

I use Acrobat Reader (Free version) a lot on PC.  I am using it to annotate study notes for an online course that I am doing.  I like to underline and highlight, circle etc.  My problem is that now I want to highlight some important lines that have already been underlined, but when the mouse goes anywhere near there, it only selects the existing lines.  I know that I could just remove the lines, and highlight, but I would really like to have both.  Is there a way to flatten the document so that you can have annotations on top of annotations?

Not with Reader, no. But you should be able to start the highlight a bit before the underline comment and then you'll be able to overlap them.
