The page numbering for the page number thumbnails seems not to be helpful if you have a number of pages of what publishers call 'front matter' (Title Page, Contents pages, abbreviations, etc. This is usually numbered using roman numbers e.g. i, ii, iii, etc. Only on absolute page number 16 do I start using arabic numerals e.g. 1, 2, 3, etc.
Can this be corrected?

Yes, Adobe Acrobat can do this.

But not Acrobat Reader X?

You need Adobe Acrobat to perform edits on PDF files - Adobe Reader is, as the name suggests, designed solely for viewing and commenting on files.

Go Edit > Preferences > Page Display, and make sure Use Logical Page Numbers is checked. I don't know if this works for me because of the way the PDF was originally set up, but when it is unchecked the absolute page number is displayed, and when it is checked, I get something like xiii (12 of 192) showing up.

This is IMPORTANT! I could not get the renumbering to work, and finally found your post. After I changed the setting the page numbering worked. Thanks! There are several other questions posted regarding this problem but they were closed for commenting.

This solved the issue I was having perfectly. We wanted to print different quantities of each page from one PDF document, but the page numbers were not lining up with the preview (page 1 was displaying as page 6, page 2 displaying as page 7, and so forth.) Unchecking "use logical page numbers" fixed the issue. Thank you, Joell S-B!
