Dear Adobe,

I have a question regarding the latest support of Adobe Reader on Windows 2008 Standard.

On our Nessus scan we have a "critical" call regarding the Adobe Reader version that is currently installed (11.0.10.0).

_________________________________________________________

Name (Nessus):

Adobe Reader Unsupported Version Detection

Synopsis:

The remote host contains an unsupported version of Adobe Reader.

Description:

According to its self-reported version, the installation of Adobe
Reader on the remote Windows host is no longer supported.

Lack of support implies that no new security patches for the product
will be released by the vendor. As a result, it is likely to contain
security vulnerabilities.

Solution:

Upgrade to a version of Adobe Reader that is currently supported.

Could please inform me, if this indeed the latest version that is supported by Adobe. And this version is safe for further current use?

We are currently in the situation that we have software that is depending on Adobe Reader and therefor we can't uninstall this Reader version.

Hopefully you can help me with this question.

Kind regards,

Lars Soek (Stork)

Well you could patch those Reader XI installations up to version 11.0.23, which was the final security update issued in November 2017 (ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/11.x/11.0.23/misc/). However your Nessus scan would probably tell you exactly the same thing because that really was the last version to support Server 2008.

I cannot speak for Adobe. Here are the system requirements for Acrobat Reader DC Adobe Acrobat Reader DC system requirements  and here is an Adobe statement about EOL for the Reader XI (11) product Adobe Acrobat XI and Adobe Reader XI End of Support | Adobe Blog

It seems you are assuming that software vendors align their support policies with OS vendors. I have seen little evidence of that. Companies make their own commercial determination.

If this is 2008R2, you can use the current version Reader DC. Otherwise you are beyond support for Reader and should stop using it. Reader 11 is the final for 2008 (not R2), but it is not supported and may have unresolved security issues.

We have currently some servers that are running on Windows 2008 Standard, and therefor this question was raised.

I hope to have a official reply from Adobe that this is indeed no longer supported and if needed needs to be removed due to security reasons.

But also having response why not longer having support as Windows 2008 Standard still having support by Microsoft (1/14/2020).

Hope you understand our current situation
