Saving Comments added to a .pdf - MacIntosh

Community Beginner ,
Feb 12, 2018 Feb 12, 2018

I am using a Mac.  I do not know much about Macs.  The computer is not mine, so I have no idea what operating system it uses.

At any rate, this is not a difficult problem; I simply do not understand how to do something that should be very simple.

I am using the free version of Adobe Reader.  I am adding comments to a .pdf.  Now I am ready to save my comments.

Adobe Reader will not let me save the comments.  I am able to do so on every PC that I use.

The .pdfs are not "read-only" files by any stretch, nor are they password protected.

Nonetheless, when I try to save comments on the Mac, I get this message:  "The file may be read-only, or another user may have it open.  Please save the document with a different name or in a different folder."

My strong preference is to overwrite the file that I have, but I tried to save the .pdf under a different name.

Same result.

I tried saving the file to a different folder.

Same result.

Why does this have to be so ridiculously difficult -- I just want to save simple comments to a .pdf.

William

To find out your operating system, click the apple in the upper left of the menu and choose "About".

But what you really want to find out is why you can't save the PDF using the free Reader, and there are a couple of reasons.

  • One is that if you have Reader X or earlier, the creator had to give you the rights to save the PDF or you couldn't. This is no longer true in Reader XI or DC or 2017. What version of the free Reader are you using?

  • Another is that you may not have permission to save. What does it say in File > Properties > Security?

This is not a Mac/Windows issue. Try opening the same file on a Windows computer and see if it works differently there.

I work with these files on Windows-based systems all the time.  I have not ever had a problem saving whatever comments I want to add on a Windows machine.

The document properties -- on the Mac I am using -- display (as I would expect) that commenting is allowed.

Hi,

Thanks for the information!

Please let us know the version of Adobe Reader on which the issue was being faced.

Also, the version of the Adobe Reader installed on Windows machine.

To check the version, follow below steps:

1. Launch Adobe Reader DC

2. Select "About Adobe Acrobat Reader DC" from "Acrobat Reader" menu.

3. Check the version.

Also, please ensure that the file is not in open/unsaved state at any some other place.

Regards,

Ammar

Also, if you want to put the pdf in dropbox or another file-share, we can take a look at it. I am on Mac, but run Windows on my Mac, so I can check both.

William, you said in your very first sentence that you don't know much about Macs, and that has to be frustrating. We will help you with that. You don't need to know that:

  1. iOS stands for iPhone Operating System (now mobile operating system)
    and
  2. OS X (Operating System) is for Macs, with the X standing for the current number, so technically you are on OS 10.11.6 El Capitan.

But most of us can translate, especially after your initial sentence, which I suspect Bernd Alheit didn't see!
