I was having the same issue and I'm finally up and running now with the current version of Adobe Reader:

    1. Run the cleaner tool provided in meenakshin83966505's post.

    2. Once the cleaner is complete, navigate to Finder and click "Applications".

    3. Confirm that Adobe Acrobat Reader is not shown there.

    4. Verify your Trash is empty.

    5. Install Adobe Acrobat Reader using the link in meenakshin83966505's post above.

    6. The installation should have worked. Attempt to open a .pdf file.

    Hope this helps.

Hey landustt96214345, I think you moved application to Trash and now next step is just empty Trash, it should solve the problem and You should be able to install the latest Reader DC from Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Install for all versions  .

Please let us know once you try this.

    -Thanks

    Hi landustt96214345,

Please run the cleaner tool Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs and restart your system.

Then try to install Adobe Acrobat Reader DC from here: Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution

This is frustrating!! I have the same problem. There is not Acrobat Cleaner Tool for MacOS. I'm using macOS Sierra and tried to reinstall adobe reader but it keeps telling:

Found a higher version Adobe Acrobat Reader DC in the installation location. Installation will terminate.

No documentaion anywhere what files have to be deleted manually. Unfortunately Acrobat Reader is required together with Adobe AIR for filing annual tax report in Poland. It didn't work with tax report app (e-deklaracje) on the first (app complaining that requires adobe reader 8.0 or higher even though it was installed) so I tried uninstalling and install again. Now I'm stuck in limbo. I'm an IT guy so Adobe consider how other non-IT users are feeling. What a cluster f***.
