Why the heck does adobe reader need to many frigging updates every frigging week!!!

I swear, as a student i have enough active programs already, i don't need more porgrams to frigging restart my computer everyday just because your stable platform of adobe sucks. The worst part about adobe's updates, are the following:

1) it is huge UPDATES (30mbs+), if I were to download the adobe reader from your site right now, it is less than the update package. Hows does that even make sense.

2) It feels the need to be important and restart your computer every time it updates.

3) Why does Adobe Reader even need so many updates, if there is constant client problems, than I think you should release a stable client all at once.

I will not use this PDF reader ever again. There is better PDF readers out there, that don't waste people's time on updates.

p.s. mounting a complain on this site also sucks. Has anyone tried to click on the product feedback page? it is like they don't want you to complain about their products.

If anyone's interested, I just got hold of a Pentium (166mHz) with Windows 95 on it, a whopping 2Gb hard drive, CD (No DVD or burning) Drive, 64Mb of PC100 SDRAM and it has Adobe Acrobat Reader 2.

Since it has a 1400 BAUD rate modem, and I have no land line phone it's impossible to update it.

$100 with13" CRT monitor.

Any Takers?

You'll never have a problem with updates... ever again.

Go ahead spend your time updating your software.  Personally, I have not seen any improvements from these updates. I have witnessed the FLASH revisions and updates render my mobile devices, linux stations, and media players obsolete for viewing simple videos because the makers of these devices want you to buy the next device while Flash wants their publishing base to upgrade, as well.  So don't tell me it is about improving the product, we all know better.

Yeah ,the updates are insane it is why i am here . But i installed pinnacle studios and it came with a liscenced adobe reader and it has options and you can turn off the updates . So i tried a " trial " version of adobe cs5 master suite and it too offers full options , including updates . So they want you to spend money to stop the annoyance , mental extortion . IT IS NOT ACCIDENTAL OR NEEDFULL . Crummy business model , reminds me of at*t tactics.

       Bleah

Remember AOL used to "update" when you logged off,lol . spying on you . I highly suspect they are doing the same, some sort of data mining to be sure , yeah class action sounds good ,,, where do i sign up .

Today I was greeted with yet another update request for Adobe Reader on my work windows 7 box. This is plain nuts. I updated it 3 times already last week. And none of the updates said that they failed yet it again is asking me to update. Here is the log of the last 2 months of this madness:

drescherjm,

Seems like you have 2 Readers on your system - 9.3.4 and 9.4.6

Please uninstall Reader 9.3.4 using Control Panel and the problem should go away.

You might  need to repair Reader 9.4.6 after uninstall of 9.3.4, but it should be easy using Control Panel or you can start Reader, go to Help menu and select Repair.

Good luck

Yes. That was indeed the case. I had 9.3.4 and 9.4.6 installed. I have uninstalled 9.3.4 and did the repair on 9.4.6.

BTW, Thanks.

This problem seems to have been fixed on my work desktop (no update prompts since I removed 9.3.4). I will have to check on the other machines in the department that had the same symptoms..

You obviously have a problem - it looks like Reader Updater, but without full verbose log from updater it is not completely clear.

I am aslo seing a sign that something else might be wrong on your system.

The log has this info:

[2011-10-14 14:29:25] Decryption failed.

[2011-10-14 14:29:25] Last check for updates is registered but not valid

If you have not touch registry yourself, it could be corrupted system file or virus.

The best suggestion I have for you is to use Cleaner tool (search this forum for the link) to remove your installed Reader (there could be more than one, please make sure all are gone)

Than install the latest version from Acrobat.com (check system requirements first)

Also, please delete the posted log - it serves no purpose any longer and makes it hard to read other posts.

If you would like to investigate without removing your Reader, enable full verbose logiing for the Updater (the instructions are posted on this forum many times), start Reader, go to Help\Check for update menu and proceed to update.

After update is finished, send me the new AdobeARM.log file - please do not post here.

haha… Adobe are still going, I switch notifications off now.  The update for something Adobe is there most days.

It's super annoying, but at least they don't spam your system like apple do.

Solution: Get your professional computer offline until the end of the month. Keep a tablet online for email. Do a managed update end of the month perhaps?

Interesting. There have been maybe 4 updates to Adobe Reader in 12 months. If you get reminders more often than that here are some possibilities.

1. You don't actually install the updates. So you get reminded again and again.

2. You have many different Adobe products with lots of updates. For instance Adobe Flash Player has more updates than Adobe Reader.

3. Some other software is putting out update reminders. Some antivirus feel the need to do this. Worse, some malware constantly tries to get you to download "updates" you might already have for some reason, perhaps not good.

If anyone is in doubt whether a reminder is genuine a screen shot may be a good place to start. Include with the screen shot the version you are currently running (from Help > About).

So those of us with an Adobe Suite like CS4 are punished LOL 9 times as much as single app users?  It is a bit crazy...  I think I've done two updates this past week.

CS4 has been past end-of-life for years. No more support. NO MORE UPDATES. I point this out because if you are being offered CS4 updates, then either they are fakes or they are the same ones over and over which you aren't installing, or which fail.

Is it my imagination, or am I always having to stop what I'm doing and allow some adobe plug in or other to update itself?

Both flash player and the pdf reader seem to be updated endlessly, and it doesn't help that ofttimes firefox or some web page insists I have to apply the update NOW IMMEDIATELY because it fixes some awful security hole or other.

Maybe its partly because I'm using several different PCs in different places, all on the web, so have to do each update several times, but it gets on my nerves. Why do they have to update these plug-ins so frequently, its not as if there's any huge demand for new functionality.

Now both firefox and IE have stopped working on one PC, almost certainly because something went wrong with the last adobe-related update.

The adobe update before installed some entirely unwanted and unrelated McAfee software (checkbox for installation must have been checked by default, don't recall even seeing it) that seemed to cause the machine to take an age to shut down.

Why won't they stop fiddling around with flash player and pdf reader! Give us something that is secure and then stop updating it every other day.   http://www.traininginsholinganallur.in/sharepoint-training-in-chennai.html  |  http://www.traininginsholinganallur.in/web-designing-training-in-chennai.html

I find it interesting, how the MVPs in this thread keep pointing out that updates aren't really that frequent, yet so many people - including myself - end up here, because they perceive the frequency as a problem. I definitely do. And it is just the Reader. None of the other programs (I have a CC subscription, 12 apps installed) are updated nearly as frequently.

EDIT: Ahem, just after writing this, it occurred to me that since I have Acrobat, I don't actually need the reader ... uninstalled ... problem solved. I hope.

‌We don't make this up, we look at the list of updates. One so far in 2016. Before that, October and July.   Watch out to see whether you still get lots of update notices for Reader. if you do, and it has gone, that would confirm something else is doing it,not Adobe.

I certainly don't think you are lying about this or making anything up, why would you. But there are/were definitely many more updates happening for me than you say. If it was less than a month, why would anyone complain? I haven't counted, but it must have been at least one per week, sometimes several per week for me. If it's not Adobe, then what? Happening on all of my 3 PCs, different configurations, Win 7 and 10.

Well, there are a number of possibilities, some of them alarming. Here are some of them.

0. Adobe have a bug or other fault which causes endless update prompts.

1. Adobe make a lot of secret updates instead of the 4 or so a year they claim for Reader, but only some people get them.

2. Some people are confusing Adobe products. This discussion is in the Acrobat Reader forum. No idea how many updates Flash gets, for example.

3. The update is notified, but not installed. Sure, it will keep reminding you.

4. The update seems to suceeed but either fails or something else rolls it back. So the update needs to be done again.

5. Some software is confused about updates. I've seen this with antivirus software - insisting urgent updates to other apps are needed, when the app is either up to date or even not actually installed.

6. Some malware is using this as a way to get stuff into your system. This certainly happens.

If anyone is motivated to trouble shoot, here are some ideas.

1. Make notes. Note the product updated. Note the product's version number after the update. You will see if these seem to be real or imaginary updates.

2. See if the update messages identify anything about what is causing it.

3. See if it takes you to a non-Adobe web site - big red flag!

4. Take and save screen shots of the update messages so we can see if they seem to be familiar.

i work with INDesign every day (sorry, this was the only blog posting i could find on this updating insanity). I have posted this note on Adobe's UX comments page. I intend to repost this every month until they stop this nonsense. Feel free to copy as needed. If enough of us go there, maybe they will get it:

https://adobe.allegiancetech.com/cgi-bin/qwebcorporate.dll

How would you like the feature to work?

1) You guys are treating INDESIGN and all the CC software like they are apps. PLEASE STOP! This is nonsensical that you keep updating them all the time, sometimes within the same month. Irritating and a huge waste of time for professional designers who dont have unlimited amount of time to waste downloading files. Please do one update per year or at most two. Stop wasting everyones time with this and work out the bugs and bells and whistles first on your end instead of expecting the user to be appreciative on non-stop change.

Why is this feature important to you?

STOP WASTING MY VALUABLE TIME HAVING TO UPDATE SOFTWARE EVERY MONTH—ALL CAPS USED FOR EMPHASIS because someone one high up on the food chain at Adobe does not get it that your software is ESSENTIAL to my being productive. I am going to continue to submit this until someone there acts on it. thank you.

Not entirely sure that posting in the Acrobat Reader forum is going to reach people with power over InDesign (and I do like your point about treating them like apps; this is how many software people see the world now).

yes, i get that. its a systemic problem with Adobe CC and not isolated to Reader. I need to find an INDD Adobe blog-if you know where it is, let me know. the main point is that they are wasting my time as a creative professional.

Totally agree with dsafdsfsdfds ! Tonight's update was longer to install that a full install of Windows 7 !!  Or at least a SP patch! Come on Adobe ! It takes less time to install your full CS suite!

And I probably get 2 or 3 updates (fortunately not as long ...) every week, on 3 of my machines! Total waste of time for something that is just an app to use once in a while.

Adobe really needs to get its shit together. It boggles the mind that something as simple as a document reader should need so many updates and need to reboot the entire machine. The only other updates that need a reboot are core Windows updates.

I'm going to try Nitro PDF reader for a while and if it can also open and render PDF documents, I'm going to uninstall the Adobe annoyware that is PDF Reader.
