I only need and have Acrobat Reader but everytime I open a PDF a pop up opens asking me if I want to:
a. start free trial and pay later or buy immediately
b. quit
I don't need or want the fancy paid package.

If you do not want to use the paid version, you can click on the "Quit" option in the pop-up window to continue using the free version of Acrobat Reader.
If the pop-up window continues to appear every time you open a PDF, you may want to check your settings to ensure you have not accidentally enabled any notifications or promotions from Adobe. You can also try reinstalling Acrobat Reader to see if that resolves the issue.

Clicking "Quit" closes Acrobat. So it's not possible to use it.

CHOOSING QUIT MAKES IT CLOSE! I'm using the basic adobe installed on my work laptop opening a PDF asks me to pay! Choosing QUIT makes it close.

NO, NO, NO. I dont want Adobe to jump onto the screen. I cannot use my regular app to open a Word doc, because this irritating Adobe message. If I close the message, the document does not open. Just tell me how to get rid of the rubbish.

Please tell us your OS and version? Acrobat has nothing to do with Word, except that when you have Acrobat or Acrobat Pro, there are macros that get installed with Word.
Did you once install the trial version of Acrobat?
Uninstall Acrobat Reader, run AcroCleaner (https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/Labs/cleaner.html), download Acrobat reader again and install the latest version.

I have come to the conclusion that everyone including software manufacturers, are going to keep harrassing you to upgrade to things you don't need. Everyone wants a subscription. It's part of everyday life now. Being constantly harrassed. It sucks big time. Look at your TV; 20 ads between shows & more ads flashing at you WHILE you are watching your show. It's a plague. There's no way out.

I'd sugegst that you log into Adobe account, as you did to get into this forum. Then click on your icon in the top right and choose Adobe Account. Then click on Plans and payment < Plans from the top. See if any you have anything listed there. Report of you see anything. This is just to check if some plan was initiated and so Adobe is trying to get you to continue.

I'm having the same issue and no, I have digital editions as the only other thing and it's not on any trial or plan.

I am experiencing this same issue on my Samsung a53 mobile device. If I download a pdf it take me to the subscription offer with no 'not now' option and if I close the offer, adobe closes completely. Have uninstalled and reinstalled the app, tried signed in and signed out and same issue occurs. Seem like a scam to force us in to subscription?

Read the whole thread for solutions. I was having exactly the same issue and it is now resolved. Apparently, Adobe will sometimes 'upgrade' your product (without your permission) to a free trial of a paid product. Eventually, this product is going to prompt you to pay. The only way to avoid this is to remove everything Adobe from your computer and download the 32-BIT reader from the link provided in my other post. This is the only reader that won't be auto-upgraded in the background.

Just came here to say that I too was having this very, very furstrating problem on my work computer, and I fixed it with a combination of uninstalling all Acrobat products, then running AcroCleaner like the user "Abambo" suggested above, and then installing the 32-bit version of Reader specifically. Finally no sign in prompt, no upgrade prompt. Thank you everyone.

I think you downloaded the wrong one, acrobat pro, which is not free. The only free reader is this
which do not require sign in also.
